Book Description
By day, Janelle Caddick is the perfect baron's daughter—elegant, demure, and newly engaged to the powerful Lord Benedict. By night, she becomes Betty Gill, a skilled midwife slipping through London's tenements to deliver babies in places where no respectable lady would go. She's kept her dangerous double life hidden for years, until Major Gabriel Vance is assigned as her bodyguard.
Gabriel is Lord Benedict's right-hand man. When he discovers Janelle sneaking around, he expects scandal. What he finds instead is a woman risking everything to save lives that society has deemed unworthy.
Now Gabriel must choose: destroy Janelle by exposing her secret or protect her from dangers she can’t even see. Worse, the more time he spends guarding her, the harder it becomes to remember she belongs to his closest friend.
As Janelle fights to save mothers and babies, Gabriel fights his growing feelings for a woman he can never have. And Lord Benedict watches them both, hiding secrets of his own—secrets that could either shatter their world or forge something far more extraordinary than any of them dared to imagine.
In Regency London, a lady's reputation is everything. But some secrets are worth protecting... and some loves are worth every risk.

About Katherine Lyons
Flirty, dirty and fun! That’s how Katherine Lyons likes her love stories. One would think that would lead her to contemporary romance, but she’s always loved the witty dialogue and hot, sexy humor of regency romance. She’s a big fan of The Bridgertons, Big Bang Theory (even though it’s over), and her favorite movie is The Avengers because she loves the MCU.
My Thoughts
A Secret Elixir, the fourth installment in Katherine Lyons’ My Lady’s Potions series, is a historical romance that dares to be different. Set against the backdrop of Regency London, the novel steps far beyond typical ballroom intrigues to explore profound themes of identity, sacrifice, and forbidden love. The story follows Janelle Caddick, who leads a fascinating double life: by day, she is the elegant, dutiful daughter of a baron engaged to the powerful Lord Benedict, but by night, she transforms into Betty Gill, a skilled midwife dedicated to helping the city’s most vulnerable women.
Her carefully guarded secret is put to the test when Major Gabriel Vance, Lord Benedict’s loyal right-hand man, is assigned as her bodyguard. What begins as a mission for Gabriel to uncover her secrets turns into an internal struggle as he witnesses her risking everything to save lives that society has deemed unworthy. As Gabriel grapples with his growing forbidden attraction to a woman promised to his closest friend, and Lord Benedict moves through society with his own hidden agendas, the three find themselves locked in a dangerous, shifting dance of duty and deception.
What truly sets this book apart is its creativity and emotional depth. Katherine Lyons masterfully handles dark, complex themes with elegance, ensuring each central character feels deeply human and flawed. As an avid Regency reader, I rarely encounter twists that genuinely catch me off guard, but this story kept me guessing until the very end. The way Janelle’s passion for medicine drives every one of her decisions makes for a refreshing, capable heroine whose agency is never reduced to window dressing.
The narration by Persephone Lee and Christopher Tester in duet is brilliant, adding a new level of immersion to the story’s tension and heart. It is important to note that this is not a traditional "love conquers all" romance; the ending is hopeful but messy, reflecting characters who refuse to lose sight of their personal values. This is a densely woven, sophisticated read—if you are looking for a standard set of tropes, this might surprise you, but if you love the Regency genre and are craving something with grit, originality, and genuine stakes, A Secret Elixir is a must-read that is bound to spark plenty of conversation.
