Test the Ice by S.J. Sylvis is an utterly captivating addition to the Blue Devils Hockey series, flawlessly narrated by Liam Dicosimo and Vanessa Vasquez. S.J. Sylvis has once again delivered a binge-worthy hockey romance that is impossible to put down; I devoured this book in a single sitting. The entire series has been exceptional, but this final installment was so worth the wait, giving us a unique and unforgettable plot centered on Reese and Malaki.

Book Description

A flirty, fake-engagement, single-mom, hockey romance by Amazon Top 50 and USA Today Bestselling Author S.J. Sylvis

I swore off men the second I trusted the wrong guy and ended up pregnant by a wealthy playboy. I was ready to prove I didn't need him--or anyone else.

At least, until Malaki Young, Chicago's hottest pro hockey star, slid into the backseat of my car and proved me wrong.

He's relentless on and off the ice. Especially when it comes to pursing me. Not to mention his charming smirk and annoyingly smooth one-liners have me testing the ice and unthawing every boundary I swore I'd never cross again.

But my ex is out for revenge... and Malaki makes an offer I never saw coming: a fake engagement.

One oversize diamond. One perfectly fabricated love story. One mission: convince the world--and my revenge driven ex--that this single mom just landed one of Chicago's most sought-after bachelors.

Malaki swears it's just pretend. But the deeper we get, the harder it is to tell where the lies end and we begin. And I can't help wondering how long before the ice beneath us gives way.

My Thoughts

Test the Ice by S.J. Sylvis is an utterly captivating addition to the Blue Devils Hockey series, flawlessly narrated by Lism Dicosimo and Vanessa Vasquez. S.J. Sylvis has once again delivered a binge-worthy hockey romance that is impossible to put down; I devoured this book in a single sitting. The entire series has been exceptional, but this final installment was so worth the wait, giving us a unique and unforgettable plot centered on Reese and Malaki.

The story centers on Reese Moreno, a strong-willed single mother who has sworn off men after a disastrous relationship with the wealthy, manipulative father of her daughter, Charleigh. She works tirelessly as an Uber driver to make ends meet, living with her supportive, headstrong sister, Zoe, who I absolutely adored. Enter Malaki Young, Chicago's hottest professional hockey star, who is relentlessly drawn to Reese from the moment he spots her. The originality of Malaki requesting Uber after Uber until Reese became his regular driver was a swoon-worthy display of dedication that was unmatched.

The chemistry and tension between Reese and Malaki were immediate and palpable. Their banter was top-tier, featuring flirty texts that made me laugh, kick my feet like a schoolgirl, and blush. Malaki is a walking, talking green flag; he's intensely kind, genuine, and instantly feels a fierce protective need for Reese and Charleigh. He sees the woman behind the protective facade she’s built and is determined to knock down her walls to gain her trust.

The plot thickens when Reese's controlling ex, Benedict—who is solely focused on winning her back and ignores their daughter—begins threatening a custody battle. When he spots Reese and Malaki kissing, Reese panics and blurts out that Malaki is her fiancĂ©. Malaki instantly jumps on the "fake engagement" wagon, fully embracing his role as her and Charleigh's fierce protector.

This fake-engagement setup allows us to witness the most beautiful part of the book: the bond between Malaki and Charleigh. The way he fully embraces Charleigh as his own, and how the little girl immediately claims him as her "dada," is incredibly heartwarming. The book has so much depth and heart, not just hot scenes. Reese's fear regarding her ex is a palpable force, and Malaki stands as a solid, present rock who never forces his love or lust upon her, instead providing a safe space for her to heal. His dedication to both his girl and her daughter is the very essence of a perfect hockey romance.
