Brutal King by Jagger Cole, narrated with brilliant execution by Aaron Shedlock and Auri Alden, is a dark, angsty, and captivating standalone romance set within the viper’s nest of the Bratva academy world. This book, part of the Savage Heirs series, features complex, deeply developed characters and is packed with enough tension, secrets, and high stakes to keep the reader thoroughly hooked.
The story centers on Lizbet, a broken beauty with a terminal heart illness and a devastating six-month expiration date, who is determined to secure a future for her sick sister. To achieve this, she must bind herself to Lukas Komarov, a man whose family her own tried to destroy. Lukas, shrouded in scars, pain, and darkness, is equally flawed and broken due to years of abuse. He is a brutal king who looks at Lizbet with cold, brutal blue eyes, and their marriage is simply a means to secure family fortunes and appease the Bratva High Council.
The rule for Lizbet is simple: get in, get out, and don't fall for the terrifying and magnetically gorgeous Lukas. However, their relationship development is complex and interesting as two broken souls are thrown together. What unfolds is a scorching, steamy journey where they inevitably begin to save each other. The author has crafted a tale with many twists and turns, particularly involving the return to the house where Lukas was abused and the confusing, complicated appearance of his twin brother, Konstantin.
While the plot offers a fascinating twist on the typical criminal heirs attending an academy trope, focusing heavily on Lizbet’s terminal illness and the depth of Lukas's trauma, the narrative occasionally suffers from mixed-up and muddled dialogue. Furthermore, although the eventual resolution sees all characters working out, the necessity of Konstantin’s intervention is not always clearly defined.
Despite these minor issues, the book is a highly enjoyable read, delivering emotional depth and intense passion. Lukas and Lizbet, in particular, are deeply developed and immediately engage the reader, making it impossible to put down. This is a story about two people who find love and salvation in the most brutal of circumstances. If you enjoy a very dark, extra angsty Bratva romance with an enemies-to-lovers vibe, no cheating, no cliffhanger, and a guaranteed happy ever after, Brutal King is a must-read. The wonderful stories and the way the friends come together, highlighting the miracles of adoption and the power of love, will leave readers laughing, crying, and eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.
