War by Brittanee Nicole is absolute romance perfection, delivering all the tropes I love most wrapped into one heart-wrenching, swoon-worthy story. Centered on a marriage of convenience between Tyler—a possessive, grumpy, tattoo-covered hockey player—and Ava, the fiery woman he loves to hate, the book hits every high note. Tyler’s secret desire to adopt three children, Bray, Josie, and Scarlett, drives the plot, and watching this gruff, gruff hero transform into a devoted "teddy bear" of a father melted my heart completely.
The tension between Tyler and Ava is top-tier, fueled by a delicious push-and-pull dynamic that crackles with heat. I loved Ava’s "take-no-bologna" attitude and her ability to hold her own against Tyler; she is a wonderfully realized character who truly comes into her own throughout the story. Bringing her into the fold of this ever-expanding world—which is already rich with beloved, interconnected characters—felt seamless and rewarding.
While the emotional journey of the adoption storyline and the found-family elements had me weeping, the book does touch on sensitive themes, including the complex moral dilemma of "savior babies." Although that specific trope is something I usually find difficult and anger-inducing, the way it was handled here didn't overshadow the profound joy of the ending. The story masterfully balances deep emotional stakes with high-quality spice and banter, keeping me fully invested from the first page to the last.
The experience is elevated by the brilliant narration of Connor Crais and Angelina Rocca, who truly bring these characters to life; Crais, in particular, completely nails the voice of the hero. Ultimately, War is a story about finding a place to belong, and seeing Tyler, Ava, and the children fit together as a perfect family left me feeling deeply satisfied. If you enjoy enemies-to-lovers, marriage of convenience, and a protective hero who will do anything for his kids, this is an absolute must-read.
