The story centers on Melina, a pop star hiding away in a small town for the holidays, where she finds herself caught in a "heaven sandwich" between two childhood friends: Cade, the hot, flirty hockey coach for the Boston Bolts, and Declan, the equally attractive, grumpy local fire chief.
The dynamic between the three is incredibly compelling. Melina reads as the perfect missing piece, and it is never in doubt that she belongs with both men; she has a way of bringing out the best in them, helping them navigate the complicated feelings that have kept them apart for years. I loved the balance in how their relationships developed: while Melina and Cade share an easy, immediate rapport, the connection between Melina and Declan is built slowly through trust and consistency. Watching their forced proximity evolve into a cohesive, loving bond—and seeing Melina inspire Cade to move past his playboy ways while coaxing a smile out of the grumpy Declan—was deeply satisfying.
The narration by Grayson Owens and Janine Granda is fantastic, adding another layer of intimacy to an already high-stakes story. Brittanee Nicole does a masterful job balancing sharp banter, heartbreak, and the emotional evolution of three complex individuals learning to be vulnerable with one another. Fans of the author will also appreciate a delightful smidge of Langfield banter, which serves as the perfect icing on the cake.
A word of caution: while I personally enjoyed the intensity of the book, it contains a significant amount of heavy content. I would 100% recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving in. This is not a book to go into blindly, as some sections can be quite difficult to read. However, for those who appreciate a well-written, emotionally charged romance where the heart wants what it wants regardless of the "trouble" it might cause, this is an excellent and highly engaging read.
