The Monster Within by Alexandra Shaw is an absolute rollercoaster of a psychological romance that will leave you completely breathless. This dark, heartbreaking, and messy page-turner is not your typical love story; it is a beautifully twisted and at times devastating journey through pure emotional highs and lows. While it can be read on its own, it is highly recommended to read the first book, Claiming Adelaide, beforehand, as it makes the shocking connections in this installment hit even harder.

Book Description

You think you know what a monster looks like?

Well, you haven’t met Murphy Donner, MD—the Surgeon of Back Bay.

Murphy is dark, morally grey, and beautifully twisted.

At nineteen he’s alone, in medical school, and an orphan with nothing. With the mind of a polymath, his intellect is his greatest asset. And he finds his mentor in Dr. Grant Davidson.

Murphy must learn to quell his urges, control his monster, before it controls him. But even with the help of his friend, the darkness continues to grow, and Murphy doesn’t yet know what it’s capable of.

Then he sees her. Lottie Beauregard—the one who brings light to the shadows of his soul. The one he shouldn’t want, but can’t stop yearning for. She is the one urge he can’t squelch. And when he sees her pain, her struggles, he can’t ignore the pull any longer.

This book will take you for a ride through the dark recesses of medicine, a world of pain that morphs into pleasure—in the mind of a man who you know you shouldn’t want, but can’t resist.

And the spice? The spice is not for the faint of heart.

Check your triggers at the door because it’s time to meet The Monster Within.

My Thoughts

The Monster Within by Alexandra Shaw is an absolute rollercoaster of a psychological romance that will leave you completely breathless. This dark, heartbreaking, and messy page-turner is not your typical love story; it is a beautifully twisted and at times devastating journey through pure emotional highs and lows. While it can be read on its own, it is highly recommended to read the first book, Claiming Adelaide, beforehand, as it makes the shocking connections in this installment hit even harder.

The story introduces us to Lottie Beauregard, a sweet and slightly naive college student who is dealing with a difficult father and an unfulfilling ex-partner. Her life changes irrevocably when she crosses paths with nineteen-year-old medical school prodigy Murphy Donner. Known as the future "Surgeon of Back Bay," Murphy is an orphan with the mind of a polymath, mentoring under Dr. Grant Davidson while harboring an incredibly dark, morally grey side. He is constantly struggling to control the violent urges and growing darkness within his own soul—until he sees Lottie. She becomes the ultimate light to his shadows, an irresistible temptation, and the one urge he refuses to suppress.

Alexandra Shaw deserves major credit for crafting such a brilliant, layered, and complex antihero. Murphy is deeply flawed and facing massive personal and social challenges, yet the author makes him feel entirely real, understandable, and impossible to resist. The intense connection between Murphy and Lottie proves they are committed soulmates who complement and complete one another, though their path is filled with heartbreak, loss, and pain. Their journey takes readers through the dark recesses of medicine, morphing pain into pleasure with a level of intense, high-octane spice that is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Structurally, the book utilizes frequent time jumps that may feel disorienting at first, but by the final page, everything comes together beautifully to serve the larger narrative arc. The story moves at a breakneck pace, culminating in a jaw-dropping, "what the actual hell" cliffhanger of an ending. For readers who love possessive, emotionally damaged male leads and high-stakes romantic suspense, this book is an absolute must-read. It is a wildly addictive experience that will leave you desperately needing the next conclusion to Lottie and Murphy's story.
