From USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Bright comes Long Time Coming, a spectacular small-town cowboy romantic suspense set in the wild and beautiful landscape of Wyoming. This book had me completely hooked from the cover and blurb alone, but once I read the prologue, I was totally invested. As my first book by Elizabeth Bright, I absolutely devoured every single minute of it. At its heart, the story revolves around Mercy River Ranch, a nonprofit sanctuary and wellness retreat run by ex-special forces hero Jeremiah and his fellow veterans, designed to help military personnel and first responders heal from the invisible mental scars that hide deep beneath the skin.
Book Description
She’s the city girl who doesn’t know she’s in danger. He’s the ex-special forces cowboy who thinks she is the danger.
Mercy River Ranch is a sanctuary for military and first responders suffering from invisible wounds that hide deep beneath the skin. When Lennon Graves shows up at our ranch, I know something is not right about her. She’s too pretty. Too spoiled. If this woman ever spent a day in service, I’d eat my cowboy hat.
It can’t be a coincidence that things happen when Lennon is around. A car accident. A fire. My background in search and rescue operations left me with a special talent for finding things people would rather keep hidden, and I’m determined to uncover Lennon’s secrets. I trusted a wolf in sheep’s clothing before, and my sister paid the price. I won’t let it happen again.
But that sassy mouth of hers reminds me how to laugh. Her sharp brain beats me at my own game. And the way she touches me heals my stained soul. I don’t trust her, but I might be falling in love with her.
Then the letters start and I realize I made a mistake, one that might cost Lennon her life: She didn’t bring the danger with her to Mercy River Ranch. The danger brought her.
About Elizabeth Bright
Elizabeth Bright is the USA Today bestselling author of romance with heart, humor, and heat. "Sparkling prose...unrelentingly sharp...unabashedly nerdy." She lives in Washington, D.C. with her two daughters, who are every bit as difficult and wonderful as the characters she writes.
My Thoughts
The trouble begins when Lennon Graves, a bold, sassy, and independent city girl, shows up at the ranch. She has booked what she believes is a standard wellness retreat in a desperate attempt to escape some very bad people and a highly dangerous situation. Because she doesn't fit the profile of a veteran or first responder, her presence immediately raises questions. To Jeremiah, she looks too pretty and too spoiled, convincing him that something is not right. Guided by a protective instinct and a painful past—having trusted a wolf in sheep’s clothing before, a mistake that cost his sister dearly—Jeremiah initially believes Lennon herself is the danger. When a series of mysterious incidents like a car accident and a fire occur, his search-and-rescue background kicks in, making him determined to uncover the secrets she is hiding.
Watching their relationship develop is beautiful and emotional. Jeremiah is completely enamored with Lennon from the start and surprised by his intense desire for her. Despite carrying plenty of baggage from growing up in a cult, Jeremiah possesses the ultimate golden retriever energy combined with a deeply possessive, protective streak that makes him top-tier book-boyfriend material. On paper, this city girl and cowboy shouldn't work, but together they are perfect. Lennon’s personality is incredible; she is strong, independent, and sharp-brained, yet remains sweet, soft, and sunshiney without ever feeling abrasive. Her sassy mouth reminds Jeremiah how to laugh, and her touch slowly begins to heal his stained soul.
The tension truly escalates when threatening letters start arriving, forcing Jeremiah to realize he made a terrible mistake: Lennon didn't bring the danger to Mercy River Ranch; the danger brought her there. The mounting suspense, paired with chilling villain POVs sprinkled throughout, keeps you turning the pages without ever overshadowing the central romance. Instead, the mystery only enhances their bond as Lennon learns to trust and love, and Jeremiah realizes he is a good person deep down.
The phenomenal audiobook narration by Aiden Snow and Rose Dioro elevates this found-family romance to a whole new level, capturing the humor, fear, and profound healing of the characters perfectly. With a phenomenal cast of side characters, an intense finale, and wonderful closure, this story delivers everything a romantic suspense lover could ask for. It is a beautiful journey of finding sanctuary in the arms of someone unexpected, and it leaves you desperately waiting to see where the rest of the series goes.
