Every time I start a new sports romance, I find myself falling a little more in love with the genre. There is just something swoon-worthy about a grumpy sportsman who turns into a total teddy bear, and Piper Rayne’s The Rulebreaker delivers that in spades.

Book Description

I’m the coach’s daughter. Falling for one of my father's players was never the plan.

Especially not Decker Davis.
Chicago Colts third baseman.
Dependable. Steady. The guy everyone trusts.
And the man who’s spent years keeping his distance—especially from me.

We have history. The kind that ten years and a thousand miles can’t touch.
So, this time, I promised myself I'd be smarter.
No getting attached. No blurred lines. And definitely, no falling.
He broke every last one within the first week.

Because Decker doesn’t just show up for me. He shows up for my daughter.
Because he fits into our lives like he was always meant to be there.
Because he looks at me like I was never something he wanted to lose.

And suddenly, the walls I've spent years building don't feel nearly as solid as they used to.

But if I let him in, I’m not just risking my heart—I’m risking hers too… and I already know what losing him costs.
I won’t let my daughter pay that price.

My Thoughts

Every time I start a new sports romance, I find myself falling a little more in love with the genre. There is just something swoon-worthy about a grumpy sportsman who turns into a total teddy bear, and Piper Rayne’s The Rulebreaker delivers that in spades.

This story follows Decker Davis, the dependable third baseman for the Chicago Colts, and Penelope, the coach’s daughter and Decker’s long-time source of both yearning and heartache. Their history is riddled with years of missed opportunities and wounds that haven't quite healed, but their deep connection eventually proves to be a force that goes beyond all the drama.

From the very first page, I was completely hooked. It is a fun, emotional, and engaging second-chance romance that had me laughing out loud and making all the "reader noises" along the way. While the slow-burn tension between Decker and Penelope is incredibly satisfying, the addition of Penelope’s daughter, Hazel, truly stole my heart.

Watching Decker show up for both of them and seeing Hazel open up to him added a beautiful layer of warmth to the story. The single-mom element was woven in so naturally, making the stakes feel higher as Penelope grapples with the fear of risking not just her heart, but her daughter’s as well.

The emotional weight of the book extends beyond the central romance, particularly through the strained relationship between the Davis brothers. After getting a glimpse of their upbringing in The Wild Card, watching Decker and Foster work through their past and repair their bond was one of my favorite highlights.

Getting to spend more time with the tight-knit team dynamic of the Colts players again made the experience even better, and the ending wrapped everything up in a way that left me feeling completely satisfied.

The narration for this book was absolutely stellar, truly bringing the story to a whole new level. Teddy Hamilton and Willa Jaymes lead a phenomenal full supporting cast—including Connor Crais, J.F. Harding, C.J. Bloom, Meg Sylvan, Erin Mallon, Sean Masters, and Austin Stone—who make every emotion feel visceral.

Between the incredible performances and the heavy-hitting heart of the Davis brothers' stories, this has become a standout favorite for me. It’s a heartfelt, funny, and swoony journey that keeps you invested until the very last word, and I am officially ready for Easton’s story.
