Book Description
A magical castle.
And her growing feelings for the bodyguard that might just ruin it all.
When Niamh Merridon flees her war-torn kingdom, she doesn’t expect to stumble upon a tower that provides the protection she’s always wanted . . .
Until some idiot arrives to “rescue” her and somehow gets her locked out. Now she’s stuck with Rafe “the Wolfe” Wolfgang, a grumpy guard who’s wholly unsusceptible to her charms. Worse, he claims she’s to marry his prince because of some prophecy.
Niamh isn’t keen on the idea, especially when she arrives at a sentient castle and discovers she can’t become queen until the castle presents her with a key. How does she get this key? No one seems to know.
Niamh quickly realizes this might give her the safety she seeks . . . if she can survive the disappearing doors, shifting rooms, and mysterious secrets, secrets more dangerous than her own. Yet the hardest part of it all might be resisting the broody guard who makes her feel brave. If she can’t avoid the temptation, it won’t just be her heart on the line, but her life. This Damsel Is Not in Distress is a standalone cozy, spicy romantasy with a grumpy/sunshine forbidden romance, a mischievous castle, and a know-it-all magical bookwyrm.

My Thoughts
This Damsel Is Not in Distress by Tee Harlowe is a delightful, cozy romantasy that balances whimsical charm with genuine emotional depth.
Narrated flawlessly by Gail Shalan and Patrick Zeller, the story introduces Niamh Merridon, who has spent three years seeking safety in an enchanted tower after the fall of her kingdom.
Her quiet life is upended when she is "rescued" by a prince and his brother, the grumpy bodyguard Rafe "the Wolfe" Wolfgang. Despite a prophecy claiming she must marry the prince to save a kingdom, Niamh’s journey leads her to a sentient castle filled with disappearing doors, shifting rooms, and a cast of enchanting sidekicks.
The world-building is incredibly imaginative, featuring a sentient painting named Margaret, fighting gargoyles, and a standout character in the form of a magical, know-it-all bookwyrm. These elements create a setting that feels both comforting and magical.
At the heart of the story is the grumpy/sunshine dynamic between Niamh and Wolfe. The banter is playful and natural, particularly as Niamh affectionately calls the broody guard "sunshine." Their chemistry builds through forced proximity into a satisfying slow-burn romance, where the "he fell first" energy makes every moment feel earned.
Beyond the cozy charm and whimsical touches, the narrative carries a strong underlying message about self-reliance and the courage to stop waiting for a rescue. As Niamh and Wolfe navigate the secrets of the castle and their forbidden feelings, they both find healing and bravery in one another.
It is a sweet, medium-spice standalone that leaves you smiling, blending the comforts of found family with a high-stakes emotional arc. This is the kind of story that immediately goes to the top of a favorite’s list, leaving readers eager to return to this magical realm.
