Book Description
Nothing’s more exclusive than Noire Underground.
Secrets. Lies. Soot and cinders.
Rhythm. Blades. Games and gore.
A knife like a claw and the strike of a needle.
This hidden haven is a throne of chains.
Maddox
Tessa Lockhart is what dreams—and nightmares—are made of.
Since she works at the resort I own, she’s technically off-limits, but rules are suggestions I tend not to take.
Especially when it comes to the silver-haired tattoo artist with a sharp tongue and quick wit.
The only problem is that she hates me.
Nah. That’s pretty perfect too.
I took care of something for her, and there’s been some new developments, so it’s time to cash in.
But there’s only one payment I’ll accept.
Her.
Tessa
Maddox Noire is tragically gorgeous and infuriatingly demented.
His sinister king-of-the-underworld persona and urge to dance through life used to give me those giddy, schoolgirl-crush butterflies.
Pathetic, I know.
Then he opened his mouth. And blew up my life.
For two and a half years, I’ve been indebted to him.
He claims that his new demands are my payment and not because I’m in danger.
As much as I despise him, dealing with a Noire is the lesser evil.
Because if our secret is out, our time is up.
About Brandy Hynes
Brandy Hynes is the author of steamy, suspenseful dark romance stories. Her specialty is irresistible, morally gray men and the sassy heroines who make them melt. No matter what chaos ensues, her antiheroes and their fierce leading ladies claw their way through rubble to reach a happily ever after.
Brandy lives where the sun is always shining with her family, who is the light of her life, and marvels at how the most beautiful treasures often bloom in the dark. Other than writing, her ideal destination is either lost in a book or poolside with her favorite people.
My Thoughts
If you aren't already a walking billboard for the work of Brandy Hynes, Twelve Mile Limit will certainly turn you into one. Hynes is an underrated powerhouse whose writing style is uniquely, poetically beautiful. While this latest installment carries her signature dark tones and sharp suspense, it introduces a refreshing, youthful energy that sets it apart from her previous work.
Set within the gritty yet glamorous world of the Noire Underground—a hidden haven of secrets, blades, and rhythm—the story drags you into the shadows and dares you to stay. This world feels like a throne of chains, where power is wrapped in velvet darkness and every page hums with a delicious sense of menace and temptation.
The heart of the story lies in the magnetic, friction-filled relationship between Maddox Noire and Tessa Lockhart. Maddox is the quintessential morally gray king: a ruthless billionaire running a playground for the criminal underground whose confidence borders on the unhinged.
Tessa, a sharp-tongued, silver-haired tattoo artist with "black cat" energy, is technically his employee. She is indebted to him after he settled a dangerous situation for her years prior. While their history is defined by debt and a resentment that crackles like a loaded weapon, the underlying infatuation is undeniable. Maddox treats rules as mere suggestions, especially when it comes to cashing in on Tessa’s debt, while Tessa struggles to reconcile her old schoolgirl crush with the man who blew up her life.
Their push-pull dynamic is top-tier; the banter is sharp enough to bite, and I found myself giggling at their playful, yet mature interactions. As much as Tessa tries to maintain her fierce independence, Maddox creates a safe space for her to be irrevocably herself. Watching their layers peel back like an onion is truly beautiful.
The plot itself is superb, balancing expected romantic suspense beats with "what the hell" twists that keep the stakes brutally high. The inclusion of the Noire brothers’ text threads adds an extra layer of intrigue, proving that nothing in this world is ever simple.
The audiobook experience further elevates this dark, decadent tale, as narrators Sean Masters and Avery Caris perfectly embody these characters. They capture Maddox’s aloof, dangerous charm and Tessa’s guarded, compelling wit with extreme brilliance.
Twelve Mile Limit is a seductive, dangerous ride that doesn’t just invite you into the La Lune Noire universe—it locks the door behind you. It is an honor to witness Hynes's growth as an author, and this book is a testament to why she deserves so much more hype.
