Piper Rayne has a gift for pulling readers in from the very first page, and The Hotshot is no exception. As the debut novel in the brand-new Dugout series, this story introduces an addictive world that feels like a cross between a high-stakes sports romance and the heartfelt chaos of Raising Helen. If you love the best friend’s brother trope paired with a fake dating scheme and a slow burn that eventually turns into pure fire, this is a must-read.

Book Description

Raising my cousin's three kids wasn't in my five-year plan.Actually, it wasn't in any plan.

One minute I'm a single labor and delivery nurse living a quiet life and the next, I'm navigating guardianship hearings, meltdowns, and homework I'm pretty sure requires a math degree.

Enter Hayes Carlisle.

My best friend's older brother.

Chicago Colts newest catcher.

And the man I once kissed and immediately pretended I didn't.

So, when the custody battle I've been dreading becomes a reality, I shouldn't be surprised that Hayes swoops in with a wild idea-a fake relationship. According to him, pretending we're together will polish his image and prove to the court I'm not taking on an instant family alone.

But pretending to be Hayes' girlfriend is a terrible idea.

Because he remembers how to make me laugh.

Because he looks at me like our kiss wasn't a one-time mistake.

Because the kids start asking him to read bedtime stories.

Because my heart starts wanting things my life doesn't have room for.

I can manage the chaos. I can fight for these kids.

But pretending not to fall for Hayes Carlisle?

That might be the one thing I can't do.

My Thoughts

Piper Rayne has a gift for pulling readers in from the very first page, and The Hotshot is no exception. As the debut novel in the brand-new Dugout series, this story introduces an addictive world that feels like a cross between a high-stakes sports romance and the heartfelt chaos of Raising Helen. If you love the best friend’s brother trope paired with a fake dating scheme and a slow burn that eventually turns into pure fire, this is a must-read.

The story follows Hayes Carlisle, the Chicago Colts' newest catcher, who is back in town and desperate to repair his "party boy" reputation. When he crosses paths with Leighton Sinclair, his sister’s best friend, the history between them is immediate and undeniable. Leighton is a dedicated labor and delivery nurse whose life has been turned upside down after the tragic loss of her cousin, leaving her as the sole guardian of three adorable, opinionated children. To help Leighton secure custody in a looming guardianship hearing and polish his own public image, Hayes suggests they fake a relationship.

What follows is a raw, emotional journey as they navigate the ups and downs of becoming an instant family. Hayes is all-in from the start, proving he is more than just a gorgeous athlete as he wins over the kids with bedtime stories and unwavering support. Meanwhile, Leighton, scarred by her parents' messy divorce, has to unlearn her fear of abandonment and trust that Hayes is someone who will actually stay when things get difficult. Their chemistry is so electric that it becomes impossible to ignore, leading to a "f-it" moment of passion that is well worth the wait.

The production of this audiobook elevates the experience even further. Performed in duet narration by JF Harding and CJ Bloom, the story also features a full supporting cast including Teddy Hamilton, Sean Masyers, Connor Crais, Willa Jaymes, Meg Sylvan, and Austin Stone. This ensemble approach brings the entire world to life, making the side characters—like Hayes’ teammates and Leighton’s best friend, Callie—feel like real people you’re already rooting for. I’m already placing my bets on who the next couple will be! The Hotshot is a beautiful testament to how the right person can change your life in the midst of chaos, and I cannot wait to see where this series goes next.
