This is exactly why I love small-town romance! Safe Haven is a new top-three favorite for me from Kristen Proby, packed with all the heart, passion, and found-family energy that makes this genre so addictive. The story centers on the "three amigos"—Ryker, Gideon, and Willow—who found salvation at Triple Creek Ranch as children when the world was a messy, unsafe place. Seeing their journey come full circle as adults was emotionally intense and beautifully written, making it nearly impossible to put down. I ended up binging the entire story in a single day, completely swept up in the unshakable bond between Ryker and Willow.

Book Description

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby comes an emotional romance where two best friends reunite at Triple Creek Ranch, proving that home is where love finds its way.

Fifteen years ago, my best friend found salvation at the Triple Creek Ranch, transforming from an angry foster kid into a hockey legend. Now, with his adoptive father’s death forcing him home, Ryker’s trading his hockey stick for ranch life—and I’m not sure my heart can handle having him this close again.

I’ve spent the past decade raising my troubled nephew alone while building my career as an audiobook narrator. When my boy needs a fresh start, Ryker offers us sanctuary at the ranch. But living under the same roof with the man who’s always owned my heart ignites feelings I’ve tried hard to bury.

Between helping manage a struggling ranch, watching my nephew find his way, and dealing with the shadows of Ryker’s fame, we discover our connection is stronger than ever. But when threats from his past surface, we’ll have to decide if our second chance is worth fighting for.

My Thoughts

The friends-to-lovers trope hits all the right notes here because of the deep history these characters share. Ryker has transformed from an angry foster kid into a hockey legend, but returning to the ranch after a family tragedy forces him to realize that Willow is the one who has always owned his heart. Their connection isn't just "insta-love"; it’s a slow-burning fire built on fifteen years of showing up for one another. When Ryker offers sanctuary to Willow and her troubled nephew, Aiden, the domestic stakes become just as compelling as the romantic ones. Watching Willow transition into a single guardian role was incredibly moving, and the way the ranch environment helps Aiden heal added a layer of depth that made me truly emotional.

The chemistry between Ryker and Willow is undeniably hot, but it’s their protective nature toward their makeshift family that really shines. While there is plenty of external drama—including the shadows of Ryker’s fame and a relentless sports agent—the focus remains on how these characters have grown into better people because of their shared hardships. The ranch itself feels like a character, stretching and growing alongside them as they navigate second chances and buried feelings. It’s a fast-paced, high-stakes journey about having each other's backs no matter what.

The audiobook is a "chef’s kiss" production, with Connor Crais and Savannah Peachwood delivering a flawless performance. Their ability to shift tones to match the emotional weight of every scene—from the steamy tension to the quiet, vulnerable moments—is a testament to their talent. They perfectly captured Ryker’s quiet strength and Willow’s fierce independence, making the listening experience feel entirely immersive. This book is a fantastic start to a new series, and the teaser for Gideon’s story has me absolutely feral for book two.
