I wasn't expecting a hockey romance to feel this real and gut-level emotional, but My Brother’s Enemy by Tijan completely caught me off guard in the best way. This story is raw, layered, and painfully human, offering a deep dive into the lives of two people who needed each other long before they ever met. Tijan has a distinct way of writing emotional chaos wrapped in razor-sharp honesty, and this book is a powerful reminder of why her stories are so addictive.

Book Description

Tyler Griffin is gorgeous, ruthless, and arrogant.
He’s also one of the best hockey players in the National Hockey League.
Not known to be a fighter on the ice, he has no problem dropping the gloves at the same time.
The sweet side of Tyler: he has a twin sister that he would do anything for, including disregarding any rules if they mean he can’t protect who he loves.

I know all of this about Tyler because I know him.
We grew up in neighboring towns.
He played against my brothers and ironically, he still does because my brothers are also NHL franchise stars.

The rivalry was in high school.
We’re all adults now.
That means certain grudges should be forgotten…

Wrong.

The rivalry is very much alive.
The hatred is visceral between my brothers and Tyler.
As for myself, I have my own complicated relationship with my brothers.
But things are about to get heated because the NHL team that I recently accepted a position to work for just traded for a certain star player: Tyler Griffin.

He’s the enemy to both of my brothers, but he’s also mine.

My Thoughts

I wasn't expecting a hockey romance to feel this real and gut-level emotional, but My Brother’s Enemy by Tijan completely caught me off guard in the best way. This story is raw, layered, and painfully human, offering a deep dive into the lives of two people who needed each other long before they ever met. Tijan has a distinct way of writing emotional chaos wrapped in razor-sharp honesty, and this book is a powerful reminder of why her stories are so addictive.

I found myself completely obsessed, thinking about the characters even when I wasn’t reading. The narrative perfectly balances a gritty sports setting with a profound exploration of trauma and healing. It’s the kind of adult romance that discusses tough, tangible topics with grace, making the story feel meaningful rather than using heavy themes for mere shock value.

The plot follows Rain Connors, a career-centered sports psychologist, and Tyler Griffin, a hockey legend and lifelong rival of her brothers. Both return to their hometown to work for the same new NHL team, bringing with them a history thick with resentment and complicated family dynamics. While the rivalry between Tyler and Rain’s brothers is visceral, the heart of the book lies in the magnetic and instant chemistry between the protagonists.

Rain is a beautifully complex heroine whose resilience shines through a heartbreaking backstory. Tyler, on the other hand, disarms you with his quiet loyalty and unexpected tenderness. Their connection isn’t built on theatrics; it grows from a place of vulnerability and the complicated ways scars shape who we let into our lives. I loved that their reactions to one another felt believable throughout the entire journey.

What truly sets this book apart is how thoughtfully it handles mental health. Every moment feels earned, especially as Rain transitions from a "misunderstood" heroine into a woman finding her own voice. The found family vibes within the hockey team add a sense of warmth to the grit, making the world feel tangible. While the spice is sizzling and anchored in deep emotional intimacy, it’s the steady, validating healing process that lingers long after the final page.

The audiobook experience further elevates the story, with Andi Arndt and Tor Thom providing stellar performances. Tor Thom’s portrayal of the "ruthless yet protective" Tyler and Andi Arndt’s nuanced take on Rain’s internal turmoil made for a truly immersive listen.

My Brother’s Enemy is an impactful, hopeful, and beautifully written romance. Just be sure to check the trigger warnings because it goes deep, but the payoff is a full heart and a story that refuses to let you go. I’m already eager to return to this world and see which of the standout side characters might get their own story next.
