Forever Ago by J. Rose is a book that will stay with me for a very long time. It is a raw, emotional, and deeply personal journey that feels like a sucker punch to the gut. If you are looking for a lighthearted "flowers and unicorns" romance, this is not the book for you.

Book Description

Hallie

I’m alone in the sea of my grief until I meet Zeke, a tornado of complications who leaves destruction in his wake. I fall hard and fast, despite all the warning signs.

Our love story is far from a fairy-tale. But if it hurts, then it’s real.

There’s a monster hiding beneath his tattooed skin, an addiction that will tear us apart. I can’t lose him, but I’m powerless to fix wounds that simply run too deep.

How do you save someone who doesn’t want to be saved?

Zeke

I’ve been a shadow of my former self ever since the crash, consumed by guilt. A chance encounter in bereavement therapy changes everything.

Hallie invades my life with her soft smiles and fiery passion. She becomes my whole world and for the first time in so long, I have a reason to live.

My demons aren’t so easily beaten. I should walk away, yet I can’t bring myself to leave the woman who took my broken pieces and brought me back to life, one kiss at a time.

I’ll fight this addiction to my very last breath for her, but the road to recovery is never simple. If I’m not careful, I might just drag her to hell with me.

My Thoughts

Forever Ago by J. Rose is a book that will stay with me for a very long time. It is a raw, emotional, and deeply personal journey that feels like a sucker punch to the gut. If you are looking for a lighthearted "flowers and unicorns" romance, this is not the book for you.

It is a beautifully tragic love story built on heavy subjects, and I urge everyone to take the trigger warnings seriously. The author’s writing is so realistic that the lines between fiction and reality often blurred for me, making every emotion feel sharp and tangible.

The story follows Hallie and Zeke, two broken souls who meet in a bereavement support group. Hallie is drowning in the sea of her own grief after losing her parents, while Zeke is a shadow of his former self, consumed by guilt and a "tornado of complications" following the death of his brother.

While Hallie tries to navigate her sorrow, Zeke turns to extreme measures to numb his pain, battling a monster beneath his skin that threatens to destroy everything he touches. Their connection is instant and magnetic, but their love story is far from a fairy tale—it is a messy, chaotic whirlwind of devotion and destruction.

What makes this book so impactful is its honest portrayal of addiction and the agonizing reality of loving someone who is fighting a war with themselves. Hallie falls hard and fast despite the warning signs, refusing to turn her back on Zeke even as his addiction tears them apart.

Zeke’s struggle between his desire to live for Hallie and the demons that want to drag them both to hell is portrayed with devastating intensity. It raises the heartbreaking question: how do you save someone who doesn’t want to be saved?

The audiobook narration by Big Bear Audio was excellent, capturing the suffocating grief and fiery passion that defines their relationship. I found myself a total blubbery mess by the final chapters, ugly crying through the epilogue as the weight of their journey finally settled in.

Ultimately, Forever Ago is less about the destination and more about the grueling, beautiful struggle of the journey. It is a story of found light in the darkest of places, and it has set the bar incredibly high for emotional romance.
