Home Field Advantage by Jenn McMahon is the kind of feel-good, small-town romance that leaves you with the best kind of butterflies. Narrated with incredible emotion and depth by Jason Clarke and Vanessa Edwin, this story follows Dallas Westbrook, a former pro baseball player navigating life after an injury, and Poppy Barlow, the soft-spoken first-grade teacher next door.
Book Description
When Dallas Westbrook is forced to the dugout after an injury ends his professional baseball career, he’s offered the position of head coach for the team that built him. But he’s barely able to find his footing before a brutal season puts him on temporary leave. Dallas is known for impulsive decisions both on and off the field. So when the opportunity arises to be the father to his daughter he always wishes he’d had, he decides to take it...even though it means picking up his life and going to Wyoming.
Living in Bluestone Lakes was never supposed to be permanent—until he meets his neighbor.Poppy Barlow is off-limits. She’s ten years younger and his daughter’s first grade teacher. She lives by routines, color-coded checklists, and quiet consistency. Where Poppy is soft and steady, Dallas is sharp edges and split-second decisions.
But life has a way of delivering exactly what they didn’t know they were missing, as if it was a puzzle piece slipping into place.
When love finally rounds the bases, it all comes down to who has the home field advantage.
About Jenn McMahon
Jenn McMahon resides along the shore in New Jersey with her husband, two boys, and three dogs. She has spent years engrossed in romance books and finding the best book boyfriends out there, to now writing her own and sharing them with the world.
When Jenn is not writing, she can be found reading, watching reruns of her favorite TV shows (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and Friends – just to name a few), or petting her dogs. She also loves taking trips to the beach with the kids, city date nights with her husband, and thunderstorms in the spring.
My Thoughts
Home Field Advantage by Jenn McMahon is the kind of feel-good, small-town romance that leaves you with the best kind of butterflies. Narrated with incredible emotion and depth by Jason Clarke and Vanessa Edwin, this story follows Dallas Westbrook, a former pro baseball player navigating life after an injury, and Poppy Barlow, the soft-spoken first-grade teacher next door.
Dallas is the ultimate "King" of heroes—a single dad who is trying his best for his daughter, Sage, while sporting a wink and a smirk that will truly make your knees weak. While the chemistry is electric from the start, this is a beautifully executed slow burn that respects the vulnerabilities of its characters.
Poppy lives with OCD, a struggle she keeps hidden behind color-coded checklists and rigid routines to manage her anxiety. When Dallas enters her life, he doesn't just disrupt her world; he embraces her exactly as she is. His patience and care are unmatched, as he allows Poppy to maintain her sense of control while providing the steady, calming presence she didn't know she needed. In turn, Poppy helps the impulsive, sharp-edged Dallas slow down and find his footing as a father.
The secondary characters breathe so much life into the town of Bluestone Lakes. From the meddling and hilarious "town oracle" Nan to the adorable Sage and the supportive community, the side cast provides the perfect balance of comedic relief and heartwarming "found family" vibes.
Watching Dallas become obsessed with Poppy while she undergoes a healing journey within herself is a total win. It is a story about balance, growth, and the quiet strength it takes to let someone in. Jenn McMahon has delivered a truly spectacular read that is as sweet as it is steamy.
The connection between Dallas and Poppy feels incredibly real—not just in their physical attraction, but in the way they truly see and accept one another. By the time they round the bases toward their happily ever after, you’ll be ready to shout from the rooftops about how perfect this book is.
It is a heartwarming, all-consuming journey that proves sometimes the most unexpected puzzle piece is the one that makes everything click into place.
