After being completely addicted to Cursed King, I was dying to know what would happen to Sebastian and Bellamy. I am a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast retellings, and J. Saman’s writing held me captive from the very first page to the last. This story picks up immediately after the high-stakes cliffhanger where Sebastian is shot, and the emotional intensity truly does not let up. Getting to dive into this next installment was the absolute highlight of my month.

Book Description

We thought we broke the curse.

I married King Sebastian of Messalina. We're pregnant with twins. His children are happy and thriving in a way they never have.

All is finally perfect and as it should be.

But we were wrong.

Darkness has returned and with it comes more heartbreak and danger than any of us are prepared for.

A darkness that not only seeks death, but to tear us apart for good.

About Julie Saman

J. Saman is a USA Today and Amazon top 10 bestselling author who writes sassy, swoony, and scorching contemporary romances. She is addicted to Diet Coke, sour candy, and indie rock. She swears way too much (especially after a glass of wine) and has a penchant for sarcasm (or so her husband and children like to tell her).

J. is an admitted lover of second chance romances, enemies to lovers, and the perfect amount of angst. She is best known for writing funny and emotional romances filled with smart, strong women, and sexy alphas who have a softer side - especially for their women.

My Thoughts

After being completely addicted to Cursed King, I was dying to know what would happen to Sebastian and Bellamy. I am a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast retellings, and J. Saman’s writing held me captive from the very first page to the last. This story picks up immediately after the high-stakes cliffhanger where Sebastian is shot, and the emotional intensity truly does not let up. Getting to dive into this next installment was the absolute highlight of my month.

The dynamic between Sebastian and Bellamy is as complex as ever in this second half of the duet. While Bellamy’s beautiful heart and mind keep her skeptical of the royal curse, Sebastian and his family have lived through enough tragedy to believe in its power. Watching that belief take a toll on their marriage was difficult to read at times because I just wanted them to have peace, but it added a raw, honest layer to their journey. Despite the friction, they consistently showed up for one another; whenever one tried to push the other away, the other was there to carry the weight of their love.

Sebastian as a character is everything you want in a dark romance lead. He oozes dominance and "in-charge" vibes, yet his devotion to Bellamy and his children—who love her just as much as she loves them—is so beautiful to witness. The addition of the pregnancy trope was handled with such care and tenderness, making their growing family feel like a true light in the darkness. Speaking of darkness, the mystery elements kept me on the edge of my seat. Even though I had my suspicions, the villain's reveal caught me completely off guard.

The emotional depth of the story is further elevated by the incredible narration of Sean Masters and Desiree Ketchum. They brought these characters to life with such grit and passion, making Bellamy’s grief feel deeply human and Sebastian’s protective nature feel tangible. Between the sizzling chemistry and the dark turns that keep you turning pages, this duet is a must-read. My heart was broken and repaired several times, but I fell even deeper in love with the Royal family of Messalina by the end.
