C.K. Darling has delivered another wonderful holiday novella with Cupid's Sweet Conspiracy, a story that manages to pack an incredible amount of heart, humor, and heat into a quick three-hour listen. While this is a fantastic addition to the Peachwood Grove series, the author writes so flawlessly that it works perfectly as a standalone for anyone looking to dive into a cozy, small-town romance. The plot centers on Courtney Hartwell and her boss, Nate Brockington, and the delightful chaos that ensues when Nate is placed on the local Valentine’s bachelor auction block. Watching Courtney, who is usually quiet and reserved, drop six hundred dollars on a single date to keep other women away from the man she’s loved in secret for a year is absolutely iconic.

Book Description

She paid six hundred dollars for one date with him. He would have gone for free.

Courtney Hartwell has been hiding her crush on her boss for over a year—until Peachwood Grove's legendary matchmaker puts Nate Brockington on the Valentine's bachelor auction block. Watching other women bid on the man she secretly wants is torture. When another woman starts throwing around serious money, quiet Courtney does something completely out of character: she bids six hundred dollars to win him.

Nate's been keeping things professional with his beautiful project coordinator, fighting every urge to cross the line he knows he shouldn't. Standing on that auction stage, dreading a night with the wrong woman, he never expects Courtney to raise her paddle. When she wins him? The surge of relief tells him everything he needs to know.

One charity date becomes a Valentine's weekend of trying not to combust from wanting each other. Behind Courtney's shy exterior, Nate discovers a woman who knows exactly what she wants—him.

And their "professional" boundaries? They're crumbling fast. The problem is, when Valentine's Day ends, they still have to face each other at work.

My Thoughts

The chemistry between these two is a masterclass in mutual pining. Nate has spent a year fighting his attraction to his project coordinator to maintain professional boundaries, but the moment he sees Courtney raise her paddle, his relief is palpable. What begins as a charity date quickly evolves into a high-stakes Valentine’s weekend where those professional lines don't just blur—they completely crumble. Nate soon discovers that behind Courtney’s shy exterior is a woman who knows exactly what she wants, and the resulting tension is far more combustible and spicy than I originally expected.

The audiobook experience is a total standout, with Andi Eloise and Ryan Lee Dunlap bringing so much personality to the roles. They perfectly capture the small-town vibes and the "grumpy-but-secretly-pining" energy Nate radiates, making the laugh-out-loud moments and fairytale feels land perfectly. Despite its shorter length, the story provides a level of emotional satisfaction and "found family" matchmaking shenanigans that you usually only find in much longer novels. If you have a few hours to spare and want a story that delivers both swoons and a warm, fuzzy ending, I cannot recommend this enough.
