I am rarely disappointed when I dive into a Whitley Cox romance, and her latest novella, My Stupid Heart—narrated by the wonderful duo of Kale Williams and Ava Lucas—is no exception. Whether writing a full-length novel or a heart-stealing short story, Cox always delivers on emotion and passion, and this release is a testament to her ability to pack a powerful punch in a compact format.

Book Description

Thou shalt not covet thy dead best friend’s wife.

Ryker McKnight has tried, and failed, to live by these words for over a decade.
He’s never taken it further than that, no matter how much his heart aches for Molly O’Shea.
However, when Molly texts him that her ex-boyfriend is stalking her and things have gotten dangerous, Ryker’s on the next flight out to Jackson Hole to save the day. Even if he knows they’ll never be more than friends.

Brendan has been dead for thirteen years, and as much as Molly misses her husband, she also knows it's okay to move on. If only Ryker felt the same way about her that she does for him. As terrifying as it is for her and her daughter, Sasha, that her ex can’t take the breakup like an adult, it's impossible to ignore the butterflies in her belly or the thump of her heart at the idea of seeing Ryker again.

Can Ryker overcome the idea of betraying his best friend and give into the mutual attraction he has with Molly while also making sure she and Sasha are safe? Or will danger surround them all before he ever gets the chance to tell Molly how he truly feels about her, ruining the chance of a happily ever after for any of them?

About Whitley Cox

A Canadian West Coast baby born and raised, Whitley is married to her high school sweetheart and together they have two beautiful daughters and a fluffy dog. She spends her days making food that gets thrown on the floor, vacuuming Cheerios out from under the couch and making sure that the dog food doesn’t end up in the air conditioner. But when the kids are at school and it’s not quite wine o’clock, Whitley sits down, avoids the pile of laundry on the couch, and writes.

My Thoughts

I am rarely disappointed when I dive into a Whitley Cox romance, and her latest novella, My Stupid Heart—narrated by the wonderful duo of Kale Williams and Ava Lucas—is no exception. Whether writing a full-length novel or a heart-stealing short story, Cox always delivers on emotion and passion, and this release is a testament to her ability to pack a powerful punch in a compact format.

The narrative centers on Ryker McKnight, a former Navy SEAL who has spent the last thirteen years living by a strict, self-imposed code: thou shalt not covet thy dead best friend’s wife. He has loved Molly O’Shea from a distance, stepping in as a loyal, nomadic family friend to her and her daughter, Sasha, while keeping his true feelings locked away behind a wall of guilt. However, the dynamic shifts drastically when Molly reaches out in desperation. Her breakup with a local soccer coach has taken a dark turn, and with strange, unsettling incidents escalating around her home, Ryker is the only person she trusts to protect them.

What follows is a gripping blend of romantic tension and genuine danger. As Ryker flies to Jackson Hole to secure their safety, the proximity forces both characters to confront the elephant in the room. Ryker must battle the internal conflict of betraying his late friend’s memory, unaware that Molly has been harboring her own feelings for him and is more than ready to move on. The transition from friends to lovers is handled beautifully, creating a slow-burn atmosphere that is surprising and impressive for a novella.

Despite the shorter length, the story is incredibly fast-paced and unexpectedly twisty. Cox weaves a thread of suspense that kept my heart racing, not just from the romantic chemistry, but from the escalating threats of the stalker. The narrative arcs are well-developed, leading to an ending that I genuinely did not see coming.

The experience was significantly elevated by the audiobook production. Kale Williams and Ava Lucas brought a layer of emotional clarity that made the characters leap off the page. Lucas captures Molly’s blend of vulnerability and maternal strength beautifully, while Williams nails Ryker’s protective, conflicted charm. Their performances sharpened the tension during the suspenseful scenes and added a profound warmth to the quieter, heartfelt moments.

My Stupid Heart is a standout addition to the author's body of work. It is a complete, satisfying story that proves you don’t need hundreds of pages to build a believable romance or a compelling mystery. For fans of romantic suspense who want a quick but substantial listen, this is highly recommended.
