Leather & Lark is the second book in the dark romance series by Brynne Weaver and it is just as good as the first.

Book Description

Contract killer Lachlan Kane wants a quiet life working in his leather studio and forgetting all about his traumatic past. But when he botches a job for his boss’s biggest client, Lachlan knows he’ll never claw his way out of the underworld. At least, not until songbird Lark Montague offers him a deal: use his skills to hunt down a killer and she’ll find a way to secure his freedom. The catch? He has to marry her first.

And they can’t stand each other.

Indie singer-songwriter Lark is the sunshine and glitter that burns through every cloud and clings to every crevice that Lachlan Kane tries to hide inside. The surly older brother of her best friend’s soulmate, Lachlan thinks she’s just a privileged princess, but Lark has plenty of secrets hiding in the shadows of her bright light. With her formidable family in a tailspin and her best friend’s happiness on the line, she’s willing to make a vow to the man she’s determined to hate, no matter how tempting the broody assassin might be.

As Lachlan and Lark navigate the dark world that binds them together, it becomes impossible to discern their fake marriage from a real one. But it’s not just familiar dangers that haunt them.

There’s another phantom lurking on their doorstep.

And this one has come for blood.

About Brynne Weaver

Writing has always been a hobby for Brynne. Even as a young child, she loved typing out stories on her grandmother’s typewriter. She wrote award-winning poetry and essays, and dabbled in various forms of fiction over the years. In 2019, Brynne committed to publishing more of her works, and released her first non-fiction book (under her real name!). She then began focusing on her first fantasy-romance (or ‘romantasy’) series, The Diviner. Next up was the three-part Shadow Realm paranormal dark romance series. Brynne then partnered with author Alexa Harlowe on the contemporary dark standalone romance, Black Sheep.

Brynne aspires to write female-focused stories about complex, resilient, imperfect characters who struggle with anger, trauma, fear, courage, and love.

My Thoughts

Leather & Lark is the second book in the dark romance series by Brynne Weaver and it is just as good as the first. In this second installment, we learn more about Rowan's brother Lachlan and Sloane's friend Lark who we got glimpses of in the first book. though this book can be read as a stand-alone for me it made it more captivating to read as part of the series.

Lachlan is a man of few words. He is also a contract killer. He dreams of a quiet life working in his leather shop and trying to forget his past. When he is sent to clean up after Lark a woman whose family his boss does a lot of work for his life changes forever. She isn't just the woman who caused him trouble with his boss but she is the best friend to his brother's wife's. When someone threatens his family the only way to save them is to marry Lark. But as Lachlan spends time with his wife he begins to see that she isn't what she appears on the surface. She holds a lot of pain and darkness much like himself. As he gets to know her he soon finds himself falling in love with his wife. But when the threat to his family attacks will he choose his brother or the woman who has stolen his heart?

Lark made a promise to herself years ago that she would never again allow someone else to save her. So, she sets out to save others the only way she knows how: by erasing the slime from the earth—a multiple deleter, if you will. When she overhears her parents talking about her best friend's husband and brother being a possible threat she decides to save them by marrying Lachlan. She isn't happy about it but she will do anything to protect her friend even marrying a so-called budget Batman. However, Lark soon sees there is more to Lachlan than she first thought and as he starts to care for her and peel back the masks she presents to everyone else she starts to let him in. Soon she is completely in love with her husband but can she trust him with the most valuable thing she owns her heart or will he destroy her? When things get too hot Lark does as she always does choose to protect those she loves. However, that choice may just destroy the one man she loves and who loves her.

This book was another great read. I loved the banter between Lark and Lachlan. They are very funny together, and I love how they push each other's buttons. I loved that she called him a budget Batman or that he called her a catastrophe. They both had so much trauma in their lives that together, they were perfect. They were what each needed to heal. I also loved that when Lark killed someone, she did it with glitter and a DIY art project—it was brilliant.

This book had so many laugh-out-loud moments and was the perfect mix of sadness and laughter. Brynne Weaver creates a wonderful story with characters you just want to revisit.
