Book Description

Eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college, but when family tragedy strikes, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team.

Yet even as Daunis falls for Jamie, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug.

Reluctantly, Daunis agrees to go undercover, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims.

Now, as the deceptions—and deaths—keep growing, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she’ll go for her community, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known.

My Thoughts

I picked up this book for book club. I wasn't sure about the book as I had never read anything by this author but the group was excited about it so I was all in.

When I started reading it I found the book to be sort of slow in the beginning but it soon picked up for me. As I got to know the lead character Daunis Fontaine I began to understand the choices she made. I felt the author did a fabulous job creating a strong character who had roots in two different communities and showing the struggle of trying to live in both worlds.

As we watch Daunis take on the role of an undercover agent to help the community she loves we see her grow and see how her love for the community and her people has clouded the truth from her. I loved how well the author wrote each character. She brought them to life.

I also really enjoyed seeing the native American culture and people through the author's eyes. I found a new respect for them and even a deep love of their ways.

This story was wonderful to read with its twists and turns. I was never quite sure where I would end up but with each lead I found myself traveling a new road and it was so good. The author kept me guessing and pulled me into the story. I felt like I could not only see the people but could feel them.

Overall this story is wonderful and I enjoyed the journey the author took me on with her storytelling.
