My Thoughts
Colt by Jessica Peterson is an enjoyable contemporary western romance and the first installment in the Double U Ranch series, blending small-town charm, a ranch setting, and the author's trademark found family dynamics.
The story follows twenty-four-year-old Lainey Brown—a brand and marketing entrepreneur with an MBA from the University of Texas who temporarily returns home to land a rebrand gig at the legendary Wallace Ranch for her side hustle, Creative Cactus—and thirty-one-year-old Colton "Colt" Wallace, the ranch foreman.
Widowed three years earlier and left to raise his six-year-old son, Dean, Colt is haunted by past betrayal, clinging fiercely to stability, and immediately puts up walls when he discovers his father hired an Austin firecracker with a sketchbook full of big ideas.
Although marketed as enemies-to-lovers, the relationship reads more like an engaging opposites-attract story featuring an addictive push-and-pull dynamic, where Lainey's playful teasing and Colt's superficial hostility quickly give way to undeniable chemistry.
As Lainey begins questioning the life she has settled for, she realizes she isn't supposed to care about a ranch, fall for the foreman, or let his six-year-old son capture her heart. Yet, watching her bring him out of his shell, bond with the ranch under a sprawling Texas night sky, and challenge Colt in ways no one else can drives the emotional core of the narrative.
The entertaining family dynamics, hot romance, and heartfelt journey of personal growth make it a fun read that proves why Jessica Peterson writes amazing stories that draw you in and keep you held till the last page.
The entire experience is brought brilliantly to life by the fantastic narration of Vanessa Edwin and Aiden Snow, whose performances breathe incredible life into the story and leave readers eager for the next installment.
