About Emmie Elms
I write steamy contemporary romance novels that’s sole goal is to make you feel everything– the butterflies, the heat, and all the beautiful chaos in between. I live in Kansas with my own romantic hero and our children. When I'm not working or enjoying family life, I can be found sneaking off to write and creating new characters to dream about.
My Thoughts
Through the Ashes by Emmie Elms is a beautiful, deeply emotional story of healing, love, and second chances that serves as a powerful debut and a strong start to the new Life in Waves series. The narrative takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster, exploring how the waves of life can sweep us from a place of perceived stability to the very bottom, only to offer the unexpected possibility of a new beginning.
The story follows Andie Harris, who thought she had it all—a life she loved and a husband she adored. In the blink of an eye, tragedy strikes when her husband, a firefighter, is killed in the line of duty, leaving her life literally reduced to ash. Trapped in the crushing weight of grief and navigating a difficult relationship with a toxic mother, Andie realizes she must escape to find her footing. With the support of her best friend, Maddie, she decides to head to Chicago for a fresh start.
It is there she meets Spencer, a protective, loving man who enters her life when she least expects it. The connection between them is instant and grounded, evolving into a beautiful romance defined by heat, spice, and a natural chemistry that leaps off the page. As their relationship deepens, Andie must face the difficult challenge of overcoming her own guilt and the judgment of a world that questions how quickly one should move on after such a profound loss. Spencer, however, is a man who refuses to give up, proving himself to be the partner she never thought she deserved as she learns to forgive herself and those around her.
What makes this novel so compelling is how Elms captures the raw struggle of losing a soulmate and the subsequent journey toward self-worth. It forces the reader to confront challenging questions: If everything you thought you knew was wrong, would you allow yourself to love again without the shame of what the world deems right? Can you find a way to honor your past while opening your heart to a future that could potentially be lost again?
The experience is elevated by an exceptional full-cast duet narration featuring Heather Costa, Jeffrey Kafer, Andi Eloise, Allie Martina, Gideon Frost, CJ Bloom, and Brandon Francis, who bring every drop of emotion to life. While some sections move a bit slowly, the sincerity of Andie’s journey makes this an incredibly engaging and well-written debut. If you enjoy stories filled with secrets, emotional scars, second chances, and a protective, devoted hero, Through the Ashes is a must-read, and I cannot wait to see what Emmie Elms has in store for the rest of the Life in Waves series.
