My Thoughts
Mountain Grump did not disappoint; S.J. Tilly once again proves she knows exactly how to write characters you can’t help but fall head over heels for. The story follows Tilda, a sweet, sensitive dreamer who suddenly inherits a home in the Colorado mountains from her late Great Uncle Jack. However, there is a catch: to keep the house out of the hands of her greedy family, the will stipulates that she must get married. This leads her to ask Ethan, the local, grumpy park ranger she just met, to be her husband.
Ethan is the ultimate mountain grump—he enjoys his quiet, isolated life and expects nothing more, but Tilda, with her long purple hair and vibrant personality, completely flips his world upside down. I absolutely adored the "my wife" energy he eventually exudes; he falls hard and loves quietly, showing his devotion through steady, thoughtful actions that perfectly balance Tilda’s fire. As someone who lives in Colorado, I also really appreciated the vivid, scenic descriptions of the mountains, which felt like a beautiful gift woven throughout the story.
The plot is a delightful mix of a cozy, snowy cabin setting, a marriage-of-convenience trope that blossoms into real love, and just enough spice to keep things interesting. I also loved how Uncle Jack’s letters from beyond the grave provided the perfect guidance for both Tilda and Ethan exactly when they needed it most. And, of course, Quackers the duck absolutely stole the show—I’m now convinced I need to raise ducks of my own!
Once again, Erin Mallon and Connor Crais nailed the narration. They are a true dream team whose performances bring an extra layer of warmth and chemistry to the story. If you are looking for a read that is equal parts tender, fun, and spicy, Mountain Grump is a must-read. Tilda and Ethan create a perfect, balanced dynamic, and I am already looking forward to whatever S.J. Tilly writes next.
