If Only You Knew by Stefanie Castro is a perfectly written story of first loves, profound heartbreak, and the enduring power of second chances. It follows Rebecca and Shane, high school sweethearts who spent their youth building plans for a future of careers and family, only to have those dreams destroyed on graduation night when a misunderstanding leads Shane to break up with Rebecca, believing he is holding her back. The pain left behind is immense, and for Rebecca, who had been with Shane since she was fourteen, the sudden loss feels insurmountable.

My Thoughts
If Only You Knew by Stefanie Castro is a perfectly written story of first loves, profound heartbreak, and the enduring power of second chances. It follows Rebecca and Shane, high school sweethearts who spent their youth building plans for a future of careers and family, only to have those dreams destroyed on graduation night when a misunderstanding leads Shane to break up with Rebecca, believing he is holding her back. The pain left behind is immense, and for Rebecca, who had been with Shane since she was fourteen, the sudden loss feels insurmountable.
Twenty-five years pass, during which both navigate their adult lives independently, until a chance encounter brings Shane back to her doorstep. When he unexpectedly hears her voice and tracks her down, he blindsides her at her home, hoping to rekindle the love he chose to walk away from decades earlier. This sets the stage for a captivating journey of redemption for two forty-something soulmates who must navigate anger, sorrow, and the complex question of whether forgiveness is possible after two and a half decades of silence. As Shane discovers the life he missed, the couple is forced to grapple with whether they can truly embrace what is right in front of them and begin again.
I adore second-chance romances, and this book delivers everything I love about the trope: a strong, resilient leading lady, a sympathetic hero who is far from a typical "dirtbag" ex, and a beautifully paced narrative that balances emotional depth with satisfying chemistry. While I generally stick to a specific list of tried-and-true authors, this book was a complete "chef’s kiss" surprise that moved me more than I expected—I truly thought I was a tough cookie, yet this story pulled at my heartstrings in all the right ways.
Beyond the romance, there is a delightful sense of justice in how the plot unfolds, including a satisfying comeuppance for a meddling mother and a well-deserved happily-ever-after. With high-quality writing and a perfect blend of nostalgia and maturity, If Only You Knew is an absolute must-read. It left me eager to dive into the rest of the series, and I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Shane and Rebecca.
