The narrative moves fluidly as their worlds collide again by pure chance when Cat’s sister signs her up for self-defense classes at Carter’s gym. What follows is a slow-burn realization that, while they come from vastly different backgrounds, they are exactly what the other needs. Catherine is a powerhouse who refuses to take crap from anyone, yet in Carter, she finally finds someone capable of being in her corner. Carter, despite his violent profession, reveals a surprisingly big heart, especially in his interactions with Ivy, who frequently steals the show with her humor and charm.

As their romance heats up and eventually lights the sheets on fire, the story leans into the suspense and intensity of the Philadelphia and New York mob scenes. When Cat’s persistent ex-husband and her past finally snap at her heels, the stakes shift from the ER to the ring. Watching Carter—a man who initially avoids attachments—step up to fight for the family he didn’t know he wanted is incredibly moving.
