Amy Daws has cooked up a total wit-fest with Take a Number, a book so addictive it pulled me into a "vortex of sugar, flour, and spice" that made the rest of the room simply disappear. Narrated to perfection by Teddy Hamilton and Erin Mallon, this story is a standout standalone in the series, blending laugh-out-loud irreverent humor with a chemistry so volcanic it practically scorches the pages.

Book Description

A brand new standalone romantic comedy from Amazon Top 13 bestseller, Amy Daws!

Dean is certain that fake dating the cute owner of his new bakery investment could be messy…but messy can be fun.

When Norah needs a fake date for her parents' anniversary party, her new silent investor is the perfect guy for the job. It seems like a foolproof plan...

That is until Norah decides to break her biggest rule and lock lips with Dean in the middle of the party to spite her meddling mother.

Turns out that Dean and Norah's chemistry is sizzling hot, and mixing business with pleasure could turn out to be a recipe for disaster.

Or maybe they can have their cake and eat it too.

My Thoughts

Amy Daws has cooked up a total wit-fest with Take a Number, a book so addictive it pulled me into a "vortex of sugar, flour, and spice" that made the rest of the room simply disappear. Narrated to perfection by Teddy Hamilton and Erin Mallon, this story is a standout standalone in the series, blending laugh-out-loud irreverent humor with a chemistry so volcanic it practically scorches the pages.

The story centers on Norah Donahue, a fiercely independent "boss bitch" focused entirely on building her bakery empire and avoiding her mother’s relentless matchmaking. She has no room for marriage or babies—only business. Enter Dean Moser, a cocky stock market savant and Norah’s silent financial partner. Dean is Boulder’s infamous ladies' man, a persona he uses to mask the scars of his parents’ sour marriage. He’s decided that real relationships are off-limits, but he can’t seem to keep his eyes off Norah, even as she brushes off his advances like flour from her apron.

Their "unlikely match" dynamic takes a turn when Norah needs a fake date for her parents’ anniversary party. Dean is the perfect candidate: charismatic, successful, and supposedly too much of a playboy to catch feelings. It seems like a foolproof plan until a rule-breaking kiss in the middle of the party reveals a sizzling, off-the-charts heat that neither expected. Mixing business with pleasure is a recipe for disaster, yet everything simply feels better when they are together.

What makes this book so special is the deep emotional growth tucked behind the snarky banter and delicious "croinuts." Watching Norah discover her true self and Dean confront the "little boy" inside who never saw a healthy relationship is both heart-wrenching and beautiful. While Dean’s idiocy might make you want to duct-tape his mouth shut at times, his transition from a "man-whore" facade to an emotionally vulnerable partner is incredibly rewarding.

By the time the climax hits, you’ll find yourself talking back to the characters, completely submerged in their world. It is a fun, swoony, and steamy escape that proves you really can have your cake and eat it too. Amy Daws has delivered a "perfection-filled" hit that highlights the magic of opposites attracting, leaving readers reluctant to return to a life devoid of Norah and Dean’s infectious energy.
