I was incredibly excited for S.J. Sylvis to introduce something new to her writing with Overtake, and the narration by the brilliant team of Bryant Walker and Samantha Cook made the experience even better. While this was only my second or third F1 romance and I went in knowing very little about the sport, the author truly delivered, proving that I do, in fact, love this world.

Book Description

A sexy Rivals to Lovers, Forced Proximity, Formula One romance from Amazon Top 50 bestselling author SJ Sylvis

Rome Pierce is Formula One’s golden boy—reckless, ruthless, and wrapped in an ego as polished as his race suit. Arrogance isn’t just a trait; it’s his personal trademark.

As the daughter of Vanstone Racing’s chairman, I’ve spent my life loathing everything about him—and the family name he carries. The rivalry between our teams runs deeper than lap times and podiums. It’s personal.

So when my father steps back for health reasons and hands me a front-line role, I don’t hesitate to prove to the world that I’m more than just the pretty Halston daughter in the paddock.

I plan to beat Rome Pierce fair and square.

Except the promotion comes with a catch I never saw coming.

Rome Pierce isn’t driving for his father anymore.

He’s driving for mine.

Now I’m the crew chief for the one man I swore I’d never work with—the rival who knows exactly how to get under my skin. Every race is a power struggle. Every briefing feels like a war. And somewhere between late nights in the garage and two hundred mile an hour battles on the circuit, the thin line between hatred and heat starts to blur.

I think Rome Pierce came here to overtake my team.

I just never expected him to also alter the course of my heart.

My Thoughts

I was incredibly excited for S.J. Sylvis to introduce something new to her writing with Overtake, and the narration by the brilliant team of Bryant Walker and Samantha Cook made the experience even better. While this was only my second or third F1 romance and I went in knowing very little about the sport, the author truly delivered, proving that I do, in fact, love this world.

The audiobook was flawlessly performed, and I found myself completely invested in seeing Rome and Tessa build something real and watching Rome find a supportive family that actually loved him. Bryant Walker and Samantha Cook brought these characters to life beautifully, making every moment feel authentic and engaging.

This was such a fun, fast-paced read that I devoured in a single day. The plot revolves around Rome Pierce, F1’s arrogant golden boy, who leaves his father's team to join a rival team where his head engineer is none other than the owner’s daughter, Tessa Halston. Their push-and-pull dynamic and constant banter made for a fantastic time, and the tension between them was electric until it finally snapped.

Tessa is a fierce, independent woman and the first female race engineer, and seeing Rome's possessiveness and slow obsession with her was absolute fire. Another major highlight for me was the Halston family group chat; the comedic relief was top-tier, and I was laughing hysterically every time someone changed the group chat name.

I truly enjoyed this introduction to the Vanstone Racing series, even though it felt a bit different from S.J. Sylvis's previous books. The pacing was very quick and kept me completely captivated throughout. The chemistry between Rome and Tessa was off the charts, and the mixture of secrets, drama, and romance was perfect. I am already anticipating the rest of the Halston brothers getting their own stories.
