Mountain Boss is a phenomenal start to the Mountain Men series. I absolutely devour it. While this story leans into small-town Colorado vibes rather than Tilly’s usual mafia setting, it still delivers the perfect blend of humor, high-stakes banter, and a possessive, slightly unhinged hero. I was hooked within the first few pages and finished the entire book in less than a day, completely captivated by the world of Black Mountain Lodge.

Book Description

Courtney

I’m just so exhausted—always living on the edge of desperation, one paycheck away from ruin.
But this new job…
It could be the fresh start I need.
It could change everything.
The contract is only for three months, but if I keep my head down, work hard, and prove myself, maybe I could stay longer.
Maybe I could make Black Mountain Lodge my home.
As I pull down the gravel drive, surrounded by the forest and mountains and bright blue skies, I feel something I haven’t felt in a while.
I feel hope.

Sterling

My new employee is late.
I’m already in a bad mood about having to train him, still salty about my old guy retiring on me.
But while I’m waiting, a woman pulls up my drive.
A woman straight from my damn dreams.
Curvy and pretty, looking at me with wide eyes framed with sooty lashes.
And suddenly, I’m no longer thinking about my late employee.
But then she opens her mouth and asks for me, introducing herself as Courtney, my new hire.
Courtney. Not Court, like the application said.
And I realize there’s been a mistake.
I can’t have this woman working here. Living on my property. Distracting me. I mean, my staff.
No. She can’t work for me. End of story.
Except she won’t leave. She even threatens to sue me.
Fine. If she won’t let me fire her before she even starts, then I’ll just have to make her leave on her own.

My Thoughts

Mountain Boss is a phenomenal start to the Mountain Men series. I absolutely devour it. While this story leans into small-town Colorado vibes rather than Tilly’s usual mafia setting, it still delivers the perfect blend of humor, high-stakes banter, and a possessive, slightly unhinged hero. I was hooked within the first few pages and finished the entire book in less than a day, completely captivated by the world of Black Mountain Lodge.

The story follows Courtney, a resilient and quick-witted woman who arrives at the lodge desperate for a fresh start. After a lifetime of living on the edge of financial ruin, she sees this new job as her last best hope. However, a misunderstanding on her application leads her new boss, Sterling Black, to expect a man named "Court." When Courtney pulls up looking like the woman of his dreams, Sterling’s immediate instinct is to send her away to avoid the inevitable distraction—but Courtney isn't going anywhere without a fight.

The dynamic between these two is pure magic. Sterling is the ultimate outdoorsy MMC—hot, older, and protective, with a touch of obsessive pining that makes him incredibly swoon-worthy. Courtney is an equally fantastic lead; she is curvy, tough, and smart, with a softness that makes you root for her happiness. Watching her blossom in the mountain setting while Sterling navigates his own "grumpy" nature and undeniable attraction created a delicious tension that I couldn't get enough of.

Their chemistry is palpable and leads to some truly blush-worthy moments. Beyond the spice, there is a beautiful sense of emotional healing as these two lonely souls realize they are exactly what the other needs. The "found family" aspect and the vivid Colorado backdrop make the story feel immersive and heartwarming, providing a satisfying emotional payoff that left me smiling long after the final chapter.

The audiobook experience is a total standout, featuring phenomenal duet narration by Erin Mallon and Connor Crais. They brought Courtney and Sterling to life with such skill, capturing every bit of their banter and raw emotion. Whether you’re a longtime fan of S.J. Tilly or a newcomer looking for a breathtaking grumpy/sunshine romance with a possessive mountain man, I cannot recommend Mountain Boss enough. I’m already ready for the next ride in this series!
