Bonus Daddy by Daphne Elliot is a wonderfully executed final installment to the Dad Coms series, wrapping up the trio of single dads with a delightful slow-burn, second-chance romance that I truly adored. The audiobook was especially immersive, brought to life by Victoria Connelly and Stephen Dexter, alongside the full returning cast of C.J. Bloom, Connor Crais, Angelina Rocca, and Sean Masters.
Book Description
Jessica Mosely is the last woman I should be thinking about.
She was my college sweetheart. The one that got away. Now she’s back—in my office, looking like sunshine in yoga pants, and asking for my legal help. She’s back, and she brought her two daughters, who are convinced the Maine Coon cat forced upon me is some kind of Disney sidekick. (He’s not. He’s Satan with whiskers.)
I’m a grumpy over-forty lawyer who lives by rules and craves routine. Jess is chaos and coconut-scented optimism. Every time she smiles, I’m twenty again—and falling harder than ever.
She drags me to yoga and ropes me into karaoke. I’d do anything for her. Even drink the pickle smoothies her daughters whip up for me. Why? Because Jess makes me want to laugh louder, live messier, and risk everything for a second chance.
The question is—can a grumpy cat dad really become the bonus daddy she and her girls deserve?
About Daphne Elliot
In High School, Daphne Elliot was voted “most likely to become a romance novelist.” After spending the last decade as a corporate lawyer, she has finally embraced her destiny. Her small-town steamy novels are filled with flirty banter, sexy hijinks, and lots and lots of heart.
Daphne is a coffee-drinking, hot-sauce-loving introvert who spends all her free time in her garden. She lives on a small farm in New England with her husband, two kids, two dogs, twelve backyard chickens, and a hive of Italian honeybees.
My Thoughts
Bonus Daddy by Daphne Elliot is a wonderfully executed final installment to the Dad Coms series, wrapping up the trio of single dads with a delightful slow-burn, second-chance romance that I truly adored. This story centers on Brian Machon, the family attorney and the last single man standing in the Jersey brownstone. Brian, a grumpy, over-forty lawyer who lives by strict rules and craves routine, is thrown when his new client turns out to be his college sweetheart, Jessica Mosely—the one that got away decades ago, not due to malice, but simply the complexity of life. Now a single mom of two girls, Jess is seeking his legal help as she rebuilds her life post-divorce.
Despite the professional line he can’t cross—he can’t date his client—that doesn't stop the delicious tension from building. Brian's inner turmoil is evident: every time Jess, who he describes as "chaos and coconut-scented optimism," smiles, he feels twenty again and is falling harder than ever. He is instantly super protective and loyal, going along with her yoga trips, karaoke nights, and even drinking the pickle smoothies her daughters whip up for him, all because Jess makes him want to laugh louder, live messier, and risk everything for a second chance.
I loved that these main characters are relatable adults in their 40s. Jess’s struggles with her post-divorce emotions and "mom-body" insecurities felt beautifully real. Equally touching is Brian’s transformation; he starts as emotionally stunted and guarded, but his journey of self-reflection and growth, fueled by Jess's re-entry into his life, is perfect. His bonding with her daughters, who hilariously mistake his Maine Coon cat (who he calls "Satan with whiskers") for a Disney sidekick, completely melted my heart and makes the kids an absolute standout.
The rest of the Jersey clan plays a vital role, enthusiastically pushing Brian and Jess together and creating memorable moments that solidify their big, chaotic found family. This book is a perfect example of "right person, wrong timing," and Daphne Elliot expertly added all the elements to make this consuming and satisfying. For those who know this world, the cameos are fantastic—including a fun Beckett moment—and the mention of Jess's Vermont roots excitingly sets the stage for the author's new Maplewood series. Brian and Jess were the perfect third couple to round out the group, proving that they deserve each other in the best way possible.
