The story follows Zoey Yates, a hyper-competent and fiercely independent woman who has spent her whole life fixing things and maintaining a careful emotional perimeter. After meeting a wolf shifter named Liam during a weekend getaway and knowing him for a mere six hours, she impulsively lists him as her emergency contact. True to form, Zoey winds up taking a spill from a ladder back home, prompting the hospital to call Liam, who drives forty minutes in thirty-two to show up for her. Despite her prickly exterior and strict rules—shaped in part by her routines and OCD representation that are woven respectfully into her character without being treated as flaws to be fixed—Liam quietly respects her boundaries, sitting across the room and proving to be the ultimate patient, non-pushy hero.
The narrative balances its romance with a wonderful supporting cast and plenty of laughs, featuring dynamic banter from a sharp-witted eleven-year-old named Bobbi and Markie, a foul-mouthed parrot with an IT helpdesk vocabulary who steals scenes with his impeccable timing. As Liam slowly dismantles Zoey’s defenses through small gestures like cooking unasked-for eggs, the two navigate their shared pasts, childhood collateral damage, and the terrifying realization of what it means to finally have someone show up for them. Complete with a warm small-town community, cozy romance vibes, and a touch of steam, the heartwarming journey is brought to life through wonderful audio narration by Sadie Provost and Jack Thompson, whose engaging performances capture every ounce of emotion, wit, and tenderness.
