Smokin' Situation by E.L. Koslo is an absolute triumph, and as my first foray into this series, it has left me eager for everything else this author has written. The story follows Rhey and Tripp, a wounded firefighter returning to his hometown to recover from severe burns sustained in the line of duty. Their paths cross almost immediately upon his arrival, sparking a romance that is as intense as it is complicated by a hidden, pre-existing connection neither initially realizes they share.

Book Description

Testing Tristan

When a wildfire grew out of control and I was caught on a remote county road going up in flames, I never expected to be rescued on horseback by a man whose face I couldn’t even see. He blazed into my life like a masked romance novel hero, scooping me up and riding me to safety. Unexpectedly cut off from town in a remote lakeside cabin with Tripp, the outside world was the last thing on my mind.

Accosting Annie

Three weeks into balancing my new jobs with the Sage Springs volunteer fire department and as manager at a local horse ranch, an unexpected wildfire threw me into a rescue mission I never saw coming. One stolen weekend with Rhey would never be enough, but I couldn’t stay away, no matter the consequences. But when our past connections threatened to pull us apart, it wasn’t so easy to separate the smoke from the fire.

Masked Men of Sage Springs Book 3

Smokin' Situation is a spicy Fourth of July themed interconnected stand-alone novel with a scarred, reclusive, cowboy cinnamon roll and his little brother's sarcastic ex-hookup. (Annie & Tristan)

About E.L. Koslo

Find the funny in your life.

That’s what EL Koslo strives to do in her life every day. She spent her youth with her nose in a book, often conjuring up storylines in a composition notebook she hid under her mattress. Her love of writing continued on through high school as she served on the school paper and wrote poetry for the literary magazine.

At University, she studied Art and Art History where she met her own prince charming after kissing a few frogs, of course.

Her love of reading and writing have been a constant in her life with her nose always buried in a book, tablet, or computer—both writing and reading.

She resides in the Midwest United States with her husband and four rambunctious children. Her days are filled with driving kids to school, activities, and sports; frequently squeezing writing time in while waiting in the carpool line.

Koslo’s characters are often developed while running on the treadmill at the gym, and she has a DVR full of Hallmark movies.

My Thoughts

Smokin' Situation by E.L. Koslo is an absolute triumph, and as my first foray into this series, it has left me eager for everything else this author has written. The story follows Rhey and Tripp, a wounded firefighter returning to his hometown to recover from severe burns sustained in the line of duty. Their paths cross almost immediately upon his arrival, sparking a romance that is as intense as it is complicated by a hidden, pre-existing connection neither initially realizes they share.

What I loved most about this romance is how deeply invested these characters are in one another from the very first moment they meet. Tripp and Rhey mesh perfectly, and their chemistry is undeniable. While you can see the narrative conflict looming on the horizon, it is handled with refreshing maturity. Rather than relying on drawn-out, unnecessary secrets, the characters are remarkably honest with each other as soon as things become serious, which kept me completely engaged without the usual frustration of miscommunication tropes.

The dynamic is perfectly described by the premise: Tripp is a scarred, reclusive cowboy cinnamon roll, and Rhey is his little brother’s sarcastic former flame. Watching them navigate their attraction while isolated in a remote lakeside cabin—set against a backdrop of Fourth of July heat—was pure, spicy perfection. Their connection feels earned, grounded, and deeply romantic.

The audiobook experience is equally brilliant. The duet-style narration by Theodore Zephyr and Madison Mitts is nothing short of wonderful. They bring an incredible depth to the characters, making the emotional stakes feel even higher. E.L. Koslo is a new-to-me author, but after finishing this, I am fully committed to her work. If you are looking for an interconnected standalone that balances grit with a "cinnamon roll" heart, I cannot recommend Smokin' Situation enough.
