In this heart-pounding suspense, a private investigator is drawn back to her small town to investigate a series of strange deaths and confront the haunting past she can no longer outrun.
Thirteen years later, a new string of mysterious deaths brings Bree back to town to assist with the investigation and face the man she never thought she’d see again. Now a local detective, Brad is wary of working alongside Bree, and her return cracks open everything he’s tried to bury: The memories. The spark. The pull that never really faded.
As new bodies begin to surface and the web of suspects grows, Bree and Brad must navigate the thin line between justice and obsession. But despite the looming danger, this could be the push they needed back to each other—if they live long enough to claim their second chance.
About J.L. Drake
J.L. Drake is a bestselling author with multiple series published in several countries. The Broken Trilogy is her bestseller, and her next series, Dark Water runs deep into the Broken and Blackstone world.
She was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, and later moved to southern California. Though she loves the weather in Cali, she would sell her left kidney for a good rainstorm. Jodi’s love of the seasons back home in Canada definitely put an appearance in her books.
When she’s not writing, you can often find her sitting somewhere along the coast of Huntington Beach, reading, or at home curled up on a couch with her two children and husband, binge-watching Marvel movies.
“My name is J.L. Drake, and this is my story…” (Like how I did that there? You’re welcome, Broken fans).
I never set out to be an author. I hated English class and couldn’t write a paper to save my life. Being dyslexic was a hurdle, but I was always interested in storytelling. When I was younger, I did a lot of acting in theater, TV, and movies. Nothing major, but Nova Scotia was just starting to get into the movie business at that point. It brought me out of my shell and taught me to look at scenes from many different angles, which has proven to be a major asset to my writing."

My Thoughts
Breathe Me In by J.L. Drake is a heart-pounding romantic suspense that completely pulls you in from the very first word and holds onto you in the best way. Blending small-town mystery, emotional trauma, and second-chance tension, this book is exactly the kind of addictive, bingeable escape read that keeps you flipping pages late into the night. The story is layered with a massive web of suspense, offering a slow drip of clues and a constant feeling that something bigger is happening underneath the surface. What makes it so brilliant is that it gives you just enough ideas to keep you guessing, but leaves the ultimate truth just out of reach while you desperately try to untangle the mystery.
The premise follows Bree Jaminson, a private investigator who is drawn back to her small hometown thirteen years after a terrifying childhood event. As teenagers, Bree and her best friend, Brad Stone, shared everything—including a horrifying brush with death when they witnessed a murderer disposing of two bodies. Traumatized and terrified of the killer still at large, Bree fled town and never looked back. Now, a new string of mysterious deaths brings her back to assist with the investigation and face the man she never thought she’d see again. Brad, now a local detective, is understandably wary of working alongside Bree, but her return cracks open everything he has tried to bury. The memories, the spark, and the pull between them never really faded, creating a dynamic packed with tension, banter, and unresolved emotion.
Bree and Brad are absolutely perfect characters, and their shared history adds incredible weight to their reunion. As new bodies begin to surface and the web of suspects grows, they must navigate the thin line between justice and obsession, discovering that this danger might be the exact push they need to claim their second chance at love. Amidst all the chaos and danger, Bree’s family provides a strong, heartwarming presence that beautifully grounds the narrative. While there are moments where entertainment and dramatic pacing take priority over strict procedural accuracy, it only adds to the highly engaging nature of the book, which reads like the spectacular beginning of a much larger series.
The audiobook narration by Stella Hunter and Corvin King is completely off the charts, bringing the intense heat, fear, and emotional stakes of the story to a whole new level. J.L. Drake absolutely slayed it with this romance, delivering a final twist that leaves you annoyed in the best possible way because it cuts off right when you desperately need more. It is an unforgettable, thrilling read that will have you demanding the second book immediately.
