Watch Over Me by V.E. Huntley is the perfect "calm before the storm," offering a heartwarming and hilarious look at life before the bodies started piling up in the Watched in Darkness series. As a prequel novella, it serves as a brilliant origin story for Sage & Summit Wildlife Sanctuary’s most notorious resident: Ricky the raccoon.

Book Description

Before the stalker. Before the bodies. There was a raccoon with terrible boundaries.

Luna Foster built Sage & Summit Wildlife Sanctuary from grief, stubbornness, and her grandfather's inheritance. She’s hand-raised wolves, rehabbed mountain lions, narrowly escaped a bear mauling, and pulled injured raptors back from the edge of death.

Nothing prepared her for Ricky.

He arrived at two weeks old. Motherless. Barely breathing. Small enough that Luna's whole heart fit around him with room to spare.

Watch Over Me is the origin story of Sage & Summit's most notorious resident, told through the chaos, laughter, found family, sleepless two AM feedings, and the kind of love that sneaks up on you while a raccoon is motorboating your best friend.

If you thought this series was only about dark obsession and dangerous men…
You haven't met Ricky yet.

The darkness is coming for Luna's world. The stalker is coming. The bodies are coming.

But not yet.

Before the wolf came. Before the darkness gathered at the edge of the trees. There was a raccoon who decided he was home, and two women who never stood a chance.

A prequel novella that introduces the beloved characters (and one very inappropriate raccoon) from the Watched in Darkness series.

Perfect for fans who want to know how Ricky developed his legendary boob obsession and see the moment before Damien and Luna's worlds collided.

About V.E. Huntley

I’m a retired film producer who has spent my life telling stories in one way or another. Just ask my cats. They had to endure a lifetime of my endlessly reciting entire dialogue scenes to them, even though all they desperately wanted to do was nap.

My childhood fear of Dracula was so intense that I couldn't sleep without the lights on and my mother guarding my bedroom door. Over time, this fear evolved into a lifelong obsession with the dark and sensual world of vampires.

So, after more than two decades in the film and television industry, I ultimately chose to pursue my true passion—writing dark and sexy paranormal romance.

My Thoughts

Watch Over Me by V.E. Huntley is the perfect "calm before the storm," offering a heartwarming and hilarious look at life before the bodies started piling up in the Watched in Darkness series. As a prequel novella, it serves as a brilliant origin story for Sage & Summit Wildlife Sanctuary’s most notorious resident: Ricky the raccoon.

Getting to experience Ricky’s rehabilitation from the time he was a tiny, motherless kit was a joy. It’s easy to see how this "lovable little rascal" grew into the sweet, boundary-crossing character fans first met in Watch Me Break. Watching his legendary obsession develop through sleepless nights and chaotic feedings was both funny and touching.

Beyond the antics, the novella provides a beautiful look at the foundational dynamic between Luna and Maren before Damien entered the picture. Seeing the world through Maren’s perspective was a true highlight; her deep love for Luna and her ability to truly see her is written with such sincerity that it made me smile throughout.

It’s a wonderful exploration of found family and the stubbornness that goes into building a sanctuary out of grief. While the series is known for its dark obsessions and dangerous men, this story proves there is so much heart at the center of Luna’s world.

This is the perfect addition for fans who want to see the moment before the darkness gathered at the edge of the trees. I loved this story from start to finish and, as always, find myself needing more from this world.
