Book Description

Zoey:

My life is anything but perfect—but I’ve gotten really good at pretending it is.

My ballet career busted before it even began, all because my body changed. And my love life? That’s been doomed from the start, too. Why? Because I’ve been in love with one guy since I was a kid. And that’s exactly how he sees me.

Gary Robinson, quarterback of the Seattle Steelheads, I’ve known him since I was twelve and in love with him since I was thirteen!

He’s never said anything, thank God. I don’t even think he’s realized it. Maybe when I was little, but now he definitely has no clue. But regardless, he’s been a constant in my life—those piercing blue eyes, that easy charm. His goofy sense of humor!

He’s everything I want but can’t have… Loving him isn’t the hard part—hiding it is.

But then he walks in on me while I’m FaceTiming with my sister, being completely ridiculous while sunbathing by the pool—instead of laughing it off, he gets…angry.

And suddenly, pretending gets a whole lot harder.

Gary:

Being a professional quarterback for the Seattle Steelheads? That was always the dream.

But Zoey? I never saw her coming.

Not only is she the coach’s daughter, but he’s also my friend. His wife is my cousin!
She’s always been there—cute, talented, sweet as hell. She’s never been anything more than the cute kid that had a crush on me once.

When did she grow up?

I’ve never been in a serious relationship before, even a not serious relationship. But now, after seeing her at the pool…I can’t unsee what I saw. And—well, I don’t want to.

My Thoughts

Alexandra Shaw scores a winning touchdown with The Quarterback, a heartwarming and steamy follow-up to The Coach. Narrated with exceptional depth by Amelia Hugh and Aiden Snow, this installment brings the Seattle Steelheads world to life as Gary Robinson finally finds his happily ever after. The audiobook narration elevates the experience, breathing vibrant life into the characters and making the witty, laugh-out-loud banter resonate even more effectively.

The story centers on Gary, a charismatic quarterback known more for his "love-them-and-leave-them" reputation than his commitment skills. That changes when he reconnects with Zoey Thompson, the coach’s daughter and his cousin's best friend. Having just returned from Juilliard after her ballet career took an unexpected turn, Zoey is grappling with body image issues and self-worth. Despite her long-standing crush on Gary, she assumes he will always view her as the kid he watched grow up.

The transition from friends to lovers is sparked by a hilarious and unforgettable encounter where Gary walks in on Zoey in a vulnerable, ridiculous moment by the pool. This instant shifts his perspective entirely; suddenly, he can no longer ignore the "raven-haired, blue-eyed beauty" standing right in front of him. Their chemistry is electric, and Shaw masterfully handles the age gap and the "coach's daughter" trope by focusing on the emotional maturity and genuine connection between the two.

While the romance is filled with "appropriate portions" of spice and humor, the narrative also tackles deeper, more serious themes. Shaw’s ability to weave blossoms of new love with difficult subjects like trauma and self-perception gives the book a layer of depth that encourages a deep empathy for the characters. The protective nature Gary develops for Zoey is sweet and grounding, especially as they navigate the inevitable tension of her father—and Gary’s coach—finding out about their secret.

As the plot moves toward a surprising twist that many readers won't see coming, the story maintains a fast-paced and engaging energy. It is a delight to see familiar faces like Travis, Ella, and Charlie again, giving the series a cohesive, family-oriented feel. Ultimately, The Quarterback is a highly entertaining read that balances "leg-kicking humor" with a sincere exploration of what it means to truly see and choose someone, proving that even the most dedicated bachelor can be moved to settle down for the right person.
