K. Bromberg’s The Backup Plan is a poignant exploration of what happens when life throws a curveball and forces you to rebuild from the ground up. The story follows Emery, a sports physician seeking a fresh start after a painful divorce from a man who never supported her career, and Lucas, a veteran NFL quarterback fighting to prove he still belongs in the league after a near career-ending shoulder injury.

Book Description

Sometimes love isn’t part of the plan. Sometimes it’s the backup plan.

Lucas Hale built his entire life around football.
The franchise quarterback.
The GOAT.
The man everyone on his team counts on.

Recovering from a devastating shoulder injury, the veteran quarterback signs with the Lone Star Rebels for one last chance to prove he still belongs in the league.

There’s just one problem—Dr. Emery Porter.

The Rebels’ new injury specialist isn’t impressed by Lucas’s charm—or his determination to push through pain.

She’s seen the scans.
She knows the damage.
And if she clears him to play, it might mean destroying his career for good.

But the more time they spend together, the more dangerous everything becomes.
For Emery’s career.
For Lucas’s future.
And the harder it becomes to remember where professional boundaries end—and where love begins.

Because if Lucas keeps playing, he could lose everything.
And if Emery stops him . . . she might lose the man she’s fallen for.

Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t losing the game.
It’s losing what you never thought you wanted.

About K. Bromberg

New York Times Bestselling author K. Bromberg writes contemporary romance novels that contain a mixture of sweet, emotional, a whole lot of sexy, and a little bit of real. She likes to write strong heroines and damaged heroes, who we love to hate but can’t help to love.

A mom of three, she plots her novels in between school runs, sports practices, and figuring out how to navigate parenting teenagers (send more wine!). More often than not, she does all of this with her laptop in tow, and her mind daydreaming of the current hero she is writing.

Since publishing her first book on a whim in 2013, Kristy has sold over two million copies of her books across twenty different countries and has landed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists over thirty times. Her Driven trilogy has been adapted for film and is available on the streaming platform Passionflix as well as Amazon.

My Thoughts

Their lives collide during a chance encounter where Lucas protects Emery from a dangerous situation, neither realizing that she is the new team doctor whose medical clearance holds the power to make or break his future. As they transition from that initial spark to a professional doctor-patient relationship, the tension is immediate and electric.

Emery isn't easily swayed by Lucas’s legendary charm; she sees the reality of his injury and the potential cost of his return to the field. This sets the stage for a compelling slow-burn romance where professional boundaries blur and the stakes feel incredibly high. Bromberg excels at crafting characters who are deeply human and easy to root for, making the themes of resilience and second chances resonate on every page.

The emotional depth of the writing is perfectly captured in the audiobook, narrated with flawless precision by Kit Swann and Lance Greenfield. Their performances truly bring Emery and Lucas to life, navigating the vulnerability of a man holding himself together by sheer force of will and a woman who finds herself falling for the one person she might have to sideline.

Between the swoon-worthy dialogue—especially those "Hale" moments that are guaranteed to make you melt—and the raw, heartfelt realization that sometimes love is the ultimate backup plan, I found myself completely unable to put this story down. It is a beautiful, high-stakes sports romance that proves starting over can lead to something even more meaningful than the original goal.
