Maple & Moonlight by Daphne Elliot is a heartfelt, emotionally grounded small-town romance that masterfully blends warmth and healing with a gripping touch of suspense. As the second installment in the Maplewood series, the story pulls readers back into a charming Vermont setting defined by harvest festivals, pumpkin canoe races, and a tight-knit community that feels like a character in its own right.Book Description
As a single mom rebuilding my life from scratch, I don’t need help. And I definitely don’t need the attention of a six-foot-three maple farmer with a beard and a hero complex who looks at me like I’m a problem he didn’t sign up for.
Falling for Josh Lawrence was never part of the plan.
But then he starts showing up.
For my son when he’s overwhelmed.
For my daughters when they need someone steady.
And for me when my hands won’t stop shaking.
I didn’t come to Vermont looking for a protector. I don’t need rescuing. But somewhere between harvest festivals, pumpkin canoe races, and quiet mornings in the sugar shack, the man I swore was just an annoyance becomes my safe place.
And when my dangerous past resurfaces and threatens the new life I’ve built, the grumpy maple farmer next door becomes my fiercest protector, ready to stand by my side while I fight for my family.
Because it turns out maple farmers are a lot like their trees: quiet, stubborn, and surprisingly sweet when the pressure builds.
About Daphne Elliot
In High School, Daphne Elliot was voted “most likely to become a romance novelist.” After spending the last decade as a corporate lawyer, she has finally embraced her destiny. Her small-town steamy novels are filled with flirty banter, sexy hijinks, and lots and lots of heart.
Daphne is a coffee-drinking, hot-sauce-loving introvert who spends all her free time in her garden. She lives on a small farm in New England with her husband, two kids, two dogs, twelve backyard chickens, and a hive of Italian honeybees.
My Thoughts
Maple & Moonlight by Daphne Elliot is a heartfelt, emotionally grounded small-town romance that masterfully blends warmth and healing with a gripping touch of suspense. As the second installment in the Maplewood series, the story pulls readers back into a charming Vermont setting defined by harvest festivals, pumpkin canoe races, and a tight-knit community that feels like a character in its own right.
At the center of the narrative is Celine, a fiercely independent single mother rebuilding her life from scratch. Her resilience is the anchor of the book; she is guarded and weary of "hero types," making her gradual journey toward trust feel authentic, earned, and deeply moving.
The chemistry between Celine and her landlord, Josh Lawrence, drives the story forward through a beautiful, slow-burn progression. Josh is the quintessential grumpy hero—a broad-shouldered maple farmer who is quiet, stubborn, and initially appears quite rigid.
However, it is his devotion to Celine’s children that truly sets him apart. Whether he is remembering her son Julian’s safe foods or gifting a horse to her daughter Ellie, his actions prove he is a steady, safe presence rather than someone trying to "rescue" a woman who is already fighting her own battles.
The plot expertly balances this tender romance with a thread of suspense as Celine’s dangerous past resurfaces. This tension raises the stakes without ever overshadowing the emotional core of the book. Instead, it reinforces the themes of strength and found family, showing that sometimes the person you least expect becomes exactly what you need.
Daphne Elliot handles sensitive topics like recovery from abuse with incredible care, wrapping them in a tale of growth and self-love. With its mix of "chaos in Crocs" energy and pure "perfection in flannel," this story is a standout for anyone who loves a protective hero and a heroine who finds her power. It is a fantastic revisiting of Maplewood that leaves you eager to see which supporting character will take the spotlight next.
