PROUD PRINCESS

Disclaimer: I received an advance screening of this movie on behalf of Level 33 Entertainment, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Directed by David Lisy and Radek Beran—who also penned the script—The Proud Princess is a charming animated feature that manages to be as emotionally resonant as it is visually attractive. The story follows the joyful Young King Benjamin (voiced by William Attenborough), who becomes captivated by a portrait of the infamously rude Princess Carolina (Georgia Lowe). When she refuses to meet him, Benjamin disguises himself as a gardener to enter her kingdom, eventually discovering a hidden kindness beneath her prickly exterior. Their bond is soon put to the test when they are forced to flee her counselors' schemes, embarking on a journey that challenges them both to grow.

The film excels in its character development, particularly with Carolina. While she begins the story as a stubborn and snobbish figure prone to amusing tantrums, the narrative thoughtfully explores the roots of her behavior. It offers a gentle lesson for children about the dangers of bottling up emotions and the transformative power of connection. In contrast, Benjamin serves as a consistently playful and "exhaustingly nice" foil, and while their sudden romance follows classic fairytale logic, their chemistry is bolstered by a strong supporting cast including Max Bennet, Sarah Jumbo, and Steve Hope Wynne.

Visually, the movie is a delight, featuring spectacular scenery and lighthearted comedic touches—most notably Carolina’s adorable dog and its obsession with a squeaky toy. While the film leans into familiar tropes, such as reliably villainous counselors and a wise elder, it maintains a playful energy that keeps the audience engaged. Even though the musical numbers are modest and the "prince saving the princess" dynamic feels a bit traditional, the film’s heart is in the right place. It is a captivating experience for adults and children alike, blending a meaningful message about kindness with the whimsical entertainment of a classic adventure.
