Jane Henry’s Wicked Altar is a devastatingly beautiful dark mafia romance that grips you from the very first page and refuses to let go. Building on the world established in Unrequited, this story follows Cavin McCarthy and Erin Kavanagh, two individuals bound by a history of childhood animosity and an arranged marriage forged in blood.

Book Description

I've hated Cavin McCarthy since the day he made me cry in a school closet.

He was my tormentor. My nightmare. The cruel boy who turned my name into a punchline and my life into hell.

Now? He's my fiancé.

An arranged marriage neither of us wanted, brokered by families who deal in blood and power. I'd refuse if I could. But my sister is dying, and the McCarthy's hold the key to saving her life.

So I'll walk down the aisle. I'll say the vows. I'll become Mrs. Cavin McCarthy.

But I'll never forgive him.

Except... the monster I remember isn't the man standing before me now. The boy who destroyed me has become someone who fights for me. Protects me. Touches me like I'm something precious instead of broken.

And when his hands are on my throat, his voice rough in my ear, I'm not thinking about revenge anymore.

I'm only thinking about surrender.

About Jane Henry

Fueled by dark chocolate and even darker coffee, USA Today bestselling author Jane Henry writes what she loves to read – character-driven, unputdownable romance featuring dominant alpha males and the powerful heroines who bring them to their knees. She’s believed in the power of love and romance since Belle won over the beast, and finally decided to write love stories of her own.

My Thoughts

Jane Henry’s Wicked Altar is a devastatingly beautiful dark mafia romance that grips you from the very first page and refuses to let go. Building on the world established in Unrequited, this story follows Cavin McCarthy and Erin Kavanagh, two individuals bound by a history of childhood animosity and an arranged marriage forged in blood.

To save her terminally ill sister, Erin is forced into a union with the man who made her school years a living hell. However, as she is dragged into the lethal McCarthy world, she discovers that the "monster" from her past has evolved into a man who would burn the world down to keep her safe.

The character work here is exceptional. Cavin is the ultimate dark book boyfriend—ruthless and strategic, yet dangerously intuitive. He reads Erin with unnerving accuracy, recognizing her neurodivergence and fostering an environment where she can thrive. By creating a sanctuary for her within their home, he slowly dismantles the walls she built against him.

Erin is an equally phenomenal lead. She is intelligent, quiet, and fearless—fire wrapped in scars. Her love for puzzles becomes a pivotal asset as she works to uncover those threatening the McCarthy legacy. The shift from mutual animosity to a deep, protective devotion is handled with a precision that makes their chemistry feel both feral and earned.

The audiobook experience is nothing short of mind-blowing. The author’s precise writing is matched by a powerhouse performance from Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross. Kai portrays Erin with stunning layers, grounding her vulnerability and awakening with raw authenticity.

Opposite her, Wen Ross is "game over" as Cavin McCarthy. His velvet-dark, commanding delivery turns every command and pause into a controlled strike; you don’t just hear Cavin, you feel his primal possessiveness. Together, they don’t just narrate the story—they unleash it.

Wicked Altar delivers a satisfying emotional payoff and a hard-won HEA, while masterfully setting the stage for an overarching series mystery. It is a story where surrender is intoxicating and power blurs into total devotion.

This is a must-listen for fans of "he falls first," "touch her and you die," and reformed-bully tropes. Jane Henry has exceeded all expectations, and I am already buzzing with anticipation for the next McCarthy brother!
