Picking up Nero by S.J. Tilly on a whim turned out to be a fantastic decision, marking a dark and delicious start to my journey through the Alliance series. Narrated with wonderful chemistry by Jack Calihan and Chloe Ryan, this story is a gritty, unhinged entry into the mafia romance genre that leans heavily into the "grumpy x sunshine" dynamic. While it follows some familiar tropes, Nero himself stands out as a uniquely dark hero who feels distinct from others I’ve read. His obsession is palpable, especially as he moves from a man who has built a destiny on a "mountain of bodies" to a protector willing to paint the streets red for the woman he claims as his own.

Book Description

Payton

Running away from home at 17 wasn’t easy. Let’s face it though, nothing before, or in the ten years since, has ever been easy for me.

And I’m doing okay. Sorta. I just need to keep scraping by, living under the radar. Staying out of people’s way, off people’s minds.

So when a man walks through my open patio door, stepping boldly into my home, and my life, I should be scared. Frightened. Terrified.

But I must be more broken than I realized, because I’m none of those things.

I’m intrigued.

And I’m wondering if the way to take control of my life is by giving in to him.

Nero

The first time I took a man’s life, I knew there’d be no going back. No normal existence in the cards for me.

So instead of walking away, I climbed a mountain of bodies, and created my own destiny. By forming The Alliance.

And I was fine with that. Content enough to carry on.

Until I stepped through those open doors, and into her life.

I should’ve walked away. Should’ve gone right back out the door I came through. But I didn’t.

And now her life is in danger.

But that’s the thing about being a bad man. I’ll happily paint the streets red to protect what’s mine.

And Payton is mine. Whether she knows it or not.

My Thoughts

The story follows Payton, a woman who has been scraping by under the radar for a decade after running away at seventeen. When Nero boldly steps through her patio door, her reaction isn’t one of terror, but of intrigue—a testament to how beautifully "broken" she is and how perfectly she fits with his darkness. While Payton can be incredibly naive at times, and the frequent Wizard of Oz references didn't quite land for me, watching her and Nero progress into a genuine couple was genuinely captivating. I would love to see her eventually evolve into a powerhouse "mob wife" in future installments.

The spice in this book is high-intensity, with the concert scene being a particular standout for how steamy it gets. However, readers should be mindful that this is a true dark romance with numerous triggers and intense themes throughout. It is an "unhinged" ride that I couldn't put down, and I am already eager to jump into the next book to see what's in store for King. If you enjoy obsessive heroes and banter-filled, high-heat romance, this is definitely a recommendation from me.
