In S.J. Tilly’s King, the second installment of the Alliance series, we are plunged back into a world of dark mafia ties and high-stakes obsession. While the story can stand on its own, I highly recommend reading Nero first; having that background makes the experience much richer, especially since we get such fun glimpses of Nero throughout this book.

Book Description

Okay, so, my bad for assuming the guy I was going on a date with wasn’t married. And my bad for taking him to a friend’s house for dinner, only to find out my friend is also friends with his wife. Because, in fact, he is married. And she happens to be at my friend’s house because her husband was busy working.

Confused? So am I.

Unsurprisingly, my date’s wife is super angry about finding out that her husband is a cheating asshole.

Girl, I get it.

Then, to make matters more convoluted, there is the man sitting next to my date’s wife. A man named King, who is apparently her brother, and who lives up to his name.

And since my date is a two-timing prick, I’m not going to feel bad about drooling over King, especially since I’ll never see him again.

Or at least I don’t plan to.

I plan to take an Uber to the cheater’s apartment to get my car keys.

I plan for it to be quick.

And if I had to list a thousand possible outcomes… witnessing my date’s murder, being kidnapped by his killer, and then being forced to marry the super attractive but clearly deranged crime lord, would not have been on my Bingo card.

But alas, here I am.

My Thoughts

The story kicks off with a disastrous date that spirals into chaos when Savannah realizes her suitor is married—and his wife is sitting right across from her at a dinner party. Enter King: the wife’s brother, a man who truly lives up to his name. What should have been a simple exit to retrieve her car keys turns into a nightmare when Savannah witnesses her date’s murder and is subsequently kidnapped by the killer himself.

King is "red flags personified," an over-the-top and fiercely protective crime lord who forces Savannah into a marriage of convenience. Despite his deranged tendencies, he is the perfect foil for Savannah. I particularly loved that this FMC is an artist and felt a bit more mature and experienced than Payton from the first book.

The narration by Jack Calihan and Chloe Ryan is brilliant, perfectly capturing the intense banter and the electric chemistry between the leads. I actually found myself enjoying this one even more than the first, mostly because the "my wife" trope was executed so well throughout the plot.

While it follows some familiar mafia beats, the timeline is incredibly fast-paced. The story moves at breakneck speed from their initial meeting and forced marriage to a harrowing escape and eventual reconciliation. It is a dark, gritty romance that definitely requires a look at the content warnings, but for fans of possessive, "touch her and die" heroes, this is a must-read.
