Falling Stars by Lex Martin, narrated brilliantly by the team of Ruby Corazon and Michael Gallagher, is a book so amazing that five stars aren't nearly enough; Maverick and Baylee are truly everything.

Book Description

Falling for the guy who broke my heart years ago wasn’t on my to-do list when I snuck into his condo.

Maverick Walker was my best friend, my safe place—the boy I trusted with my whole heart—until one reckless kiss in high school ruined everything. Now, he’s an NFL football player, and I’m a struggling small-town hairstylist, newly single and expecting a baby. With my ex gone and someone vandalizing my business, my life feels like it’s crumbling beneath me.

When my best friend Paige suggests hiding out in Maverick’s swanky condo to regroup while he’s recovering from an injury in New York, it seems like a lifeline.
Except he comes home. Unexpectedly. When I’m half-dressed.
Now I’m stuck in his orbit again, unprepared for the way he still makes my heart race. Maverick is charming, ridiculously hot, and as off-limits as ever. But I have bigger problems than his smoldering smile—like figuring out who’s targeting me and why they won’t stop.

As the threats escalate, so do Maverick’s protective instincts. But with his life in New York and mine in Texas, our worlds couldn’t be further apart. And yet, with danger closing in, his arms are the only safe haven I have left.
But how do I let him protect me without risking my heart again—when loving him feels as out of reach as a falling star?

My Thoughts

Falling Stars by Lex Martin, narrated brilliantly by the team of Ruby Corazon and Michael Gallagher, is a book so amazing that five stars aren't nearly enough; Maverick and Baylee are truly everything.

Baylee’s life is crumbling: she’s a struggling small-town hairstylist, newly single and expecting a baby, and her business is being mysteriously vandalized. Maverick Walker was once her best friend and safe place—the boy she trusted with her whole heart—until one reckless kiss in high school ruined everything and she was rejected. After that, Baylee kept her distance, which was easier when Maverick was away playing in the NFL. When her best friend suggests hiding out in Maverick’s swanky, unused condo to regroup while he recovers from an injury in New York, it seems like a lifeline. Baylee sneaks in, only for Maverick to come home unexpectedly when she’s half-dressed.

Now, Baylee, who is fiercely independent and admirably determined to make her own way without taking advantage of anyone—a trait I greatly admired as a former single mom—is stuck in the orbit of the charming, ridiculously hot, and highly off-limits football star. Falling for the guy who broke her heart years ago wasn’t on her to-do list, and she holds him accountable for his past mistakes, which prevents any instant forgiveness and leads to wonderful drama and angst. As a Hispanic female myself, I particularly loved that Lex Martin represents so many people in her books, and Baylee’s strong, unapologetic character instantly made me fall in love with her.

Maverick, despite his tendency to put his foot in his mouth, undergoes wonderful growth throughout the story. He easily jumps in to help Baylee and doesn’t hesitate to step up with her baby, quickly becoming her rock. Together, they form a safe space for each other, especially as the mysterious threats targeting Baylee escalate. This unexpected danger allows Maverick to show her he's ready to stand up for her, becoming instantly protective.

As the threats escalate, so does their undeniable chemistry, but with his life in New York and hers rooted in Texas, their worlds couldn’t be further apart. Yet, with danger closing in, his arms are the only safe haven she has left. The question becomes how she can let him protect her without risking her heart again, when loving him feels as out of reach as a falling star. The narration really brought the author’s words to life, creating a complex and gripping forced proximity, single mom, friends-to-lovers romance with second-chance vibes. It's going to be hard to beat Maverick as the top Book Boyfriend, that's for sure!
