My Thoughts
Three to Ride by Lexi Blake, brilliantly narrated by Kitty Bang and Lee Samuels, is an excellent, fun, and emotionally gripping start to a series, introducing the delightful madness of the small town of Bliss, Colorado, and two delicious twin cowboys.
The story centers on Rachel Swift, a woman on the run from her worst nightmare—a stalker turned abuser—who is now living under a new identity, constantly looking over her shoulder. Low on cash, Rachel finds herself stranded on a mountain road outside Bliss, where she is rescued by a quirky local who takes her to town. Welcomed with open arms, she soon lands a job at the local diner and meets Maxwell "Max" Harper.
Max and his twin brother, Ryan, known as "Rye," share more than just a twin bond; they have a history of sharing women. However, after breaking up with their last girlfriend who wanted out of Bliss, the horse trainer Max and Sheriff Rye—who is known for chasing down alien conspiracies and having to deal with the local nudists and mimes—decide to try solo relationships.
Max, a self-proclaimed "grumpy grape" known for his temper, instantly falls head over heels for the new waitress. Rachel, having lost faith in men and the law, is initially hesitant and even chastises Max for unacceptable public behavior, turning him into a surprisingly well-behaved puppy. Max pursues her solo but keeps his brother in mind. Rachel, given her past trauma, is particularly wary of Rye, the town sheriff, which adds a layer of delicious tension.
The narration by Kitty Bang and Lee Samuels is a perfect casting, bringing this emotional rollercoaster to life and capturing the fitting and believable voices of all the characters. The book expertly handles the transition into a polyamorous relationship, showing how the trio—Max, Rye (who is initially just pining), and Rachel—must navigate their fears, insecurities, and the belief that they might "scare her away." The author makes the socially less-accepted situation feel completely normal for these characters, with the witty dialogue and humor providing great comic relief.
As Rachel opens her heart to love again, allowing herself to be loved by both men, the sexual tension is at its best. While the hero and heroine share an early one-on-one scene, the satisfying and well-rewarded money scene starring all three comes after the halfway mark. The story is never dull, blending drama, angst, quirky small-town charm, and steamy romance with thrilling, suspenseful moments.
When Rachel's past inevitably catches up with her, putting all of Bliss in danger, she realizes she can’t leave behind the love and home she’s found. With her whole quirky town standing behind her, Rachel is ready to make her stand. This book is a fabulous emotional rollercoaster that brilliantly blends action, heat, and humor, making it an unputdownable page-turner and a great ride.
