The unique structure, with chapters moving chronologically from December 1st to the 25th, intensifies the emotional impact of the story.
The book immediately establishes a somber, heavy atmosphere as we meet Camryn Moore, a high-powered CFO who is not living, but merely existing and slowly unraveling. Numb to the world and haunted by huge losses from her past, Camryn loathes December and attempts to escape her relentless sadness through endless work, copious dirty martinis, and meaningless one-night stands—until she meets Dec.
Dec encounters Camryn in a bar one evening and, right away, sees all the sadness and darkness she carries. He is charming, reserved, and maddeningly perceptive, with an intriguing air of mystery about him. Though very confident and attentive, he never pressures Camryn, moving only at the pace she allows.
