Years later, he’s made it his mission to keep running into me.
He gets hired at the law firm where I work and steals my promotion.
I quit and start my own firm in my small town.
I didn’t expect him to follow me here.
I definitely didn’t expect him to join a rival town firm.

My Thoughts
Only Fate by Charity Ferrell is an emotional, messy, and ultimately beautiful small-town second-chance romance, brilliantly narrated by Lance Greenfield and Lacy Laurel. This novel perfectly captures the magical charm of Blue Beech while delivering a delicious blend of second-chance and rivals-to-lovers tropes.
Essie never hoped to see Adrian Castillo again after he broke her heart years ago. But fate, as the title suggests, has other plans, making it Adrian's mission to relentlessly run into her. The complication begins when Adrian is hired at the law firm where Essie works, stealing the promotion she deserved. Essie, understandably devastated and furious, quits to start her own firm back in her small hometown of Blue Beech.
The story gets even more complicated—and entertaining—when Adrian follows her to Blue Beech, joining a rival town firm. Now, they are legal adversaries, forced to work a case against each other. This constant, close-proximity rivalry fuels a powerful enemies-to-lovers tension, forcing all the old, painful emotions Essie had for him to resurface. The central question Essie faces is raw and relatable: Can the same person who broke your heart be the one to fix it, or will they only inflict more harm?
Through dual perspectives and flashbacks, we see how close Adrian and Essie once were, how a simple miscommunication tore apart their powerful connection, and why Essie is so guarded now. While her heartbreak and tenacity are completely understandable, Adrian proves himself to be a genuinely good guy with a persistent, lovely heart. He knows what he wants—Essie—and he keeps going, fighting to win her back even when she continually shuts him down.
The book excels in its witty banter and the beautiful, aching chemistry between the two leads. The narrative seamlessly weaves together the emotional stakes of their past with the engaging legal plot lines of the present. Only Fate is a heartfelt story of redemption and the messy, authentic path to healing. It can be read as a standalone, but fans of small-town romance and second chances should absolutely add this must-read to their list.
