What can I say about the movie Bird Boy? This movie is a profoundly emotional and utterly enchanting adventure that follows the journey of a young boy named August. Having tragically lost his mother, August is shuffled between different family members until he finally lands with his uncle and his wife on a farm in the South African countryside.

About BIRD BOY

From writer-director Joel Soisson (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure), comes an enchanting adventure and a triumphant tale of friendship. Orphaned August (Litlhonolofatso Litlhakanyane) is a kid who doesn’t seem to belong anywhere – until he ends up on a farm in the South African countryside. Skeptical at first of his well-meaning foster parents (played by Leoni and Tony Kgoroge) and struggling to fit in at his new school, everything changes when August stumbles upon an egg. When the egg hatches and out pops a tiny ostrich, an everlasting friendship is born. August and his ostrich, named Koobus, spend every moment together and their days are filled with fun, companionship, and lots of dancing. Until one day, Koobus tries to defend August from the school bully and ends up being sent away to an ostrich farm. Determined to rescue his friend, August will risk it all and together they learn the true meaning of friendship.

My Thoughts

What can I say about the movie Bird Boy? This movie is a profoundly emotional and utterly enchanting adventure that follows the journey of a young boy named August. Having tragically lost his mother, August is shuffled between different family members until he finally lands with his uncle and his wife on a farm in the South African countryside.

Here, August, played beautifully by Litlhonolofatso Litlhakanyane, begins to learn what family truly means. He's skeptical at first of his well-meaning foster parents, played by Leoni and Tony Kgoroge, and struggles to fit in at his new school, but everything changes the moment he stumbles upon an egg. When the egg hatches, out pops a tiny ostrich, and an everlasting friendship is born. August names his new feathered friend Koobus.

Their days become filled with fun, companionship, and lots of dancing, as August and Koobus spend every single moment together. The cinematography in this movie is truly breathtaking, perfectly capturing the expansive beauty of the land and open range, which serves as a magnificent backdrop to their blossoming bond.

At the heart of this movie is the powerful, resonant storyline that family is the people who love and understand you, not necessarily the ones you're born to. The movie runs the full gamut of emotions—loss, love, heartbreak, and ultimately, healing. However, their inseparable friendship is tested when Koobus tries to defend August from the school bully and, as a result, is sent away to a distant ostrich farm. Determined to rescue his friend, August will risk it all, and together they learn the true meaning of friendship and love.

From writer-director Joel Soisson, who also wrote Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, comes this triumphant tale of connection and belonging. I absolutely love this movie and wholeheartedly encourage you to take a moment to enjoy this wonderful film with your family.
