Wow, just wow. High By the Beach by Wren Amari is an emotional rollercoaster that completely wrecked me in the best possible way. I devoured this debut novel in one sitting and I'm not sure my heart has recovered.
Book Description
A summer of healing.
That’s what my mother calls it.
I’m not here to heal.
I’m here to forget.
So the plan is simple: run fast, drink deep, and steer clear of the ocean.
That last rule falls apart my first night here.
One high.
One slip beneath the surface.
One pair of hands pulling me back up.
Carson Eli thinks he has me pegged from the jump — party girl, shallow, reckless.
He wants no part of me.
Hates that I’m taking up space in his circle.
But the thing is… he keeps watching.
And maybe that’s why he starts to see pieces slipping loose.
Starts showing up on days I’m fading into nothing.
Disdain softens.
Numbness fractures.
And everything starts to hurt in colour again.
But the thing about chasing highs — there’s always a come-down.
Carson might be teaching me to stay above water, but he still doesn’t know the reason I keep going under.
And if he gets too close, he won’t just get pulled in — he’ll drown with me.

My Thoughts
This story is a raw, deep, and beautiful exploration of grief. We meet Brielle, who is using a summer at the beach to run from the pain of losing her twin sister. Her plan is simple: forget. She's reckless, hiding behind a party-girl facade, and avoiding the ocean at all costs. But that plan falls apart the moment she meets Carson Eli, a broody man with his own past trauma.
What starts as a mutual dislike—he thinks she's a shallow party girl, she thinks he's a grump—evolves into a stunning, slow-burn romance. Watching Carson's perception of Brielle shift as he sees the woman beneath the mask is everything. His small, tender gestures of affection are simply swoon-worthy, and the way he helps her find her way back to herself is a beautiful journey.
This book isn't just about romance; it's a story of healing and growth. Wren Amari masterfully explores the depths of Brielle's sadness and her quiet strength. I wanted to cry for her, hug her, and tell her everything would be okay. The supporting characters, especially Carson's roommates, add so much to the story, showing the power of found family and unwavering support.
High By the Beach is a heart-wrenching and unforgettable read. It's the kind of book that leaves a lasting impact and makes you want to sit with the story for a while before picking up anything else. This debut is an absolute masterpiece, and I can't wait to see what Wren Amari writes next.
