My Thoughts

"Greek Mothers Never Die," directed by Rachel Suissa, is a comedy-drama that delves into the complex and often overbearing relationship between mothers and daughters, through a Greek lens. The film centers on Ella, played by Abby Miner, who struggles to break free from the life her mother, Despina (Suissa), has planned for her. Despina's sudden death doesn't quite liberate Ella, as her mother returns as a ghost, continuing to meddle in her daughter's life.

Suissa, who also wrote and produced the film, draws inspiration from her own experiences, lending a personal touch to the narrative. The film explores themes of familial duty, personal aspiration, and the challenges of finding one's own path, even in the face of strong maternal influence. The dynamic between Ella and Despina is both humorous and poignant, capturing the universal struggle of adult children seeking independence.

While the film utilizes some familiar tropes, reminiscent of films like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Mama Mia!", it also offers a unique perspective on these themes. The cinematography, by Angelica Perez-Castro, adds a visual richness to the story, effectively capturing both the Greek and Floridian settings.

Overall, "Greek Mothers Never Die" is an enjoyable film that balances comedic elements with heartfelt moments. It's a light-hearted exploration of mother-daughter relationships, with a touch of supernatural flair.
